Lancing of abcess?

Hi, my Charlie (4) has got a massive, golfballsized, abcess under his chin. He has been on antibiotics for over a week now but there is no sign of it getting any smaller. The vet said if it is not better within two weeks it will have to be lanced. I heard / read different opinons about lancing - what are your experiences. Should it be done under general anestaetic / local or without any? What are the chances of it then healing totally and is it dangerous to the guinea? Poor Charlie also has "wonky teeth" at the front currently, they need to be clipped, but the vet wanted to wait until the abcess has been sorted. Would be grateful for any advice - thanks.

One of my girls had one lanced, they sedated her.. she's fine, came home with strict instructions to keep her on her own for a week, but needed no antibiotics, and no further interference..:(|)
 
hi Marion sorry to hear Charlie has an abscess :(

the only experience I have of a piggy with an abscess wasnt a very nice one due to our incompetant vets I'm still so angry with them for missing it grrrr

Jules had stopped eating so had a few visits to the vet to get teeth etc checked out - they trimmed the front ones but said everything else looked ok - this carried on and they said if he still does not eat (we had been syringe feeding etc) that they would keep him in and take a look at hime - they had him for two days even put him under GA looked at his back teeth and told us pretty much the best thing to do was pts :( - we didn't however as they said they could refer us on to a specialist dentist who, to cut a long story short, wanted an insane amount of money.

Good job we have a great friend who we phoned and within a day we were on our travels to Cambridge where Jules got the specialist treatment he needed at a fraction of the cost

The abscess was drained by Laura and Vedra and then Jules had an op to lance it properly and remove all bad tissue - I will try and post a pic of him post-op but theyre not pleasant
