Hi all My Female Guinea Pig developed a large abscess near her bum area I took her to the vets today and he drained some out he did say it felt hard which he said was swollen due to abscess but to me the abscess still looks like the same size as it was before I took her to the vets. He gave me antibiotics and Metacam for her and told me if it doesn't go down in a week to take her back and he would lance it but would have to do it by giving her gas.
I thought he would of been able to drain it all out without putting her out and from what I have read people say the antibiotics will not get rid of it. She is nearly 7 years of age and so worried if she has to have surgery. Has anyone else had any similar experiences what did your vets do ? In herself she is fine eating like there is no tomorrow and still running around she is full of life bless her any advice would be great. x

My vet seems to think it will clear up with antibiotics I feel like screaming I thought I had finally found a vet that I had faith in but I just feel let down again :(

Yes it will need to be opened and removed or drained, if removed intact it can be stitched up. If drained then it will be left open so it can be flushed and allowed to heal from the base. Manuka honey (sterile medical grade) is excellent in helping healing. I wouldn't worry too much as long as she is generally healthy she should cope fine. I have had many older pigs have surgery and all have done well

It has gone down a lot now but was bleeding today bright red blood so got her booked in for tomorrow morning. I'm worrying myself sick but miss piggie still doesn't seem bothered in the slightst lol bless her.
