Went to feed my kids guinea pig tonight and found a it has a large sore area with no hair and with large bits of skin missing. It has also lost loads of wieght and this is all since the week end. My first thought was that the rabbit (which it lives with) had attached it, however, looking at how the wound runs down his leg and foot I cant see how this could be the case. I have since been told its mites, I just cant believe that its happened so quick. If anyone does no what this is and has any idea what to do about it I would be gratfull. Ive added some pictures of him now and from the 18/09/09 just to show the difference.

Oh poor piggy that looks really really sore.:( Are you certain that the rabbit hasn't attacked him at all because it does look pretty bad and in my experience mite infestation doesn't usually look as bad as that especially in a week.?/ I would definitely take him to the vet and see what he recommends and maybe seperate him from the rabbit.:(

Well I dont think its the rabbit as he has a sore along the side of his foot (top image), it doesnt look like the kind of thing the rabbit could do. Either way hes in the house now anyway and I will take him to the vets tomorrow.

I had a rabbit that attacked a guinea pig once in a similar place to where yours has got the sore.:( Yes it would be a good idea to take him to the vets because he may need some antibiotics. Good luck and hope he's okay.:)

Not sure if anyone noes, but what kind of size hole will a rat get though? I'm pritty sure I have some living under my shed (if not rats then mice). I no they will attack and take baby guinea pigs, not sure about him tho, altho he isnt very old.

I agree. I don't think it's mites as the wound looks too nasty. I would also separate your piggie from the rabbit. If it's the rabbit that attacked your piggie and they are left together you wouldn't want that wound to get any worse. Clean the wound with warm salt water, trim any fur from around the wound so it doesn't get stuck in it and then put a thick layer of vaseline over the top to stop anything getting into it. The other option would be to use the savlon spray which would cover the wound with a layer of iodine to stop any further damage. I would definately take him to the vets as it will probably need antibiotic treatment.

My god that is terrible, poor little thing. Well done on noticing and taking him to the vets. It could be mites, the vet may want to treat as a precaution, which perhaps you should do, as it won't have any bad side effects.
I personally also think the rabbit did this. I love rabbits, and they don't mean to hurt pigs, but because they don't speak the same language they can sometimes hurt pigs. Please seperate these two, they should never be together in the first place.
Not to mention the fact that guineas can contract pasturella from rabbits, which will eventually end in being put to sleep.

Vet couldnt say what did it. Hes been done for mites and Ive got anitibotics and cream for him. The vet said it will take a month or so to get better.

Glad he's going to be okay.:) Please don't put him back with the rabbit again though cos he might not be so lucky next time.:(

Hi,

I think the rabbit has attacked this piggy and it could also have mites because of the stress. You did the right thing in going to a vet and getting Ivermectin. This will get rid of any mites. You have also done the right thing in seperating the gp from the rabbit. The two species do not mix because rabbits are unpredictable and can inflict awful damage on a gp,even kill it.
If you have a health food shop or a Waitrose supermarket near you,get a tube of Green People organic baby slave. This is very soothing, healing, and will act as a barrier against dirt/bac teria.
I have pmd you with further help.

Just to let everyone who replied no, hes doing a lot better. Most of it has healed or healing. Hes still got no hair there tho.
