A few weeks ago Enoch had some large squishy poops. I took him off veg and his poops were back to normal within 48 hours.

As the weather has been nice the week before last, the pigs have been having a little grass time but I need to add that they have been having small amounts of grass before being allowed out in their run.

Last Monday the pigs were in their run and after about an hour, I noticed really soft poo again. It was like toothpaste but I think this was mainly because it was already soft but been weed on and trodden on. I brought them back indoors and it soon became clear it was Enoch. I checked him over and gave his bum a clean checking he wasn't impacted.

I put Enoch on a veg ban and gave him a dose of fibreplex and by Tuesday evening, his poops were more or less back to normal.

I gave Emma and Erika their night time veggies on Tuesday evening and was naughty and allowed Enoch to have a a small amount of celery and cucumber.

About an hour later, the squishy poops were back so he had another 1ml of fibreplex.

On Wednesday morning, his poops were still a little squishy but were the normal brown colour but were huge. I would say twice the size of a normal sized pellet.

There was an odour there but I wouldn't say it was a foul poo smell.

He had another dose of fibreplex and dentinox. He didn't have any veg and by yesterday morning, his poops were again more or less back to normal.

I gave him a little veg last night and this morning and now he has the squishy poops again :(

Enoch is around 15 months old and neutered.

I had a similar problem with Eliza last year. Her poops wasn't squishy but she had a gurgling and popping tummy from time to time. I took her to the vets one day as she was very uncomfortable and I was worried she had bloat. It wasn't bloat but my vet suggested she just had a sensitive tummy.

I am wondering if Enoch could have the same problem?

If there is no improvement after another veg ban, I shall be taking him to the vets but how long should I keep him off veg for to know if it is that causing the problems or something else?

As he is acting perfectly normal and eating plenty of hay.

Any advise is much appreciated x

It does sound as though he has got a delicate tummy, the fibreplex I have found out the other day is a pre-biotic and then there are pro- biotics like your Biolapis which are the good bacteria, I saw the vet the other day that recommended using both of them. I wonder if this will help Enoch?

I agree, try adding in Bio Lapis or Avipro Plus too. I think it looks pretty certain that it is the veg affecting him but maybe keep him off veg for 2 or 3 days?

Thank you.

I have some avipro plus. Would it be worth putting it in their drinking water (Enoch drinks a lot when off veg) and would it be ok for Emma and Erika to drink as they all share the same cage?

I will keep him off veg for 3 days and see how he goes x

I think so but I think it can go off pretty quickly in a bottle. It is ok for all to have it though. You can also sprinkle Avipro on their food. Is he good at taking a syringe?

As much as you can throughout the day.

He may be eating his poos because his digestion is slightly upset, Millie does this when she has an upset tummy, eats all of her own and everyone else's poos.

Thanks Helen. I'll give it a go.

I guess that makes sense. I didn't think he was pooing at all the other day but he was eating it.

I was worried about bloat or a blockage or something but would he be acting normal if that was the case?

Sorry about all the questions

You could also try syringing him water that you have soaked fresh healthy poos from Emma and Erika in; they contain gut bacteria of theirs and can help to stabilise his guts.

If he had bloat or a blockage, he would be off his food and very painfully quite quickly. it sounds rather like a tender digestion than a gas/fluid problem.

How odd that this thread is open I was going to post about the same thing
Rory has been having some large poops as well! Think it might be the veg… would it be worth taking him off the veg all substitute for a little while. I don't know what he use to be given before I got him

He's still as lively as ever, eating his dry food and hay too… have noticed he's very delicate in his eating

Well the title sertenly put me off my food ! :)
I have had a similar problem with marzipan due to not being on the grass over winter and then being put back on it straight away
I don't believe a guinea pigs digestive track is as fast as a hour from start to finish (correct me if I'm wrong)
I can't over any advice except giving him a grape sized amount once a day for a week and then twice a day if there are no side affects then slowly increase from there :)
Hope he's ok Astrid x

Thank you. Enoch is certainly not off his food which I guess is a good sign.

He has had 1ml of water and avipro plus until he'd had enough. I have also put a scoopful in the water bottles which I have seen all 3 drink from.

Enoch has also had his head up Emma and Erika's bums which they seem happy for him to do.

I have been reading up on past threads and it would seem others have had similar problems and many seem to be neutered boars that were left with sensitive tummies. Enoch was neutered before he came to me. I wonder if that could also be another factor.

@Jess If I were you, I would follow the same advise I have been given and remove veg altogether from Rory's diet for 2 - 3 days.

Enoch hasn't had any veg since yesterday morning.

His poops have firmed up a bit but now they seem smaller :( Is it just his system getting back to normal?

He did loads of huge squishy poops yesterday.

He is definitely eating and drinking today. He can't get enough hay!

Are you still giving him his fibreplex, if so try and syringe him some water too, small poos can indicate dehydration.
Did you manage to give him also the avipro plus (probiotics). I think you are doing the right thing holding back the veg though, it is giving his tummy chance to recover.

No, I have only been giving him the avipro plus. He has had some via the syringe and it is also in both water bottles which I have seen him drinking from throughout the day.

Should I give him some fibreplex too?

He hasn't lost any weight.

I think I shall keep him off veg tomorrow and try him again on Tuesday morning?

I think the avipro plus and water should be fine, things should start to settle down again with the probiotics in a couple of days. Perhaps his system was just out of sorts, it can happen to us sometimes.

Apologies to anyone who is eating.

After not having veg since Saturday morning and having probiotics, here are Enoch's poos this morning. I hope this is a sign his tummy is settling down and compared to how they were the other day, that it is dietary related?

They look good to me, bit pointed which shows that he has had some disturbance to his gut.

It is most likely I would think, but is one of those things you may never know.
