Hello All,

I adopted 3 boys from a rescue after they were found abandoned over 5 years ago. I lost Ben in March, and now I’ve lost Billy. I’m devastated losing 2 so quickly, and to illness as well despite numerous vet visits, surgeries and hand feeding and caregiving around the clock. My dilemma now is I have Bertie remaining. Bertie lives in his own C&C separate (but next to his brothers) as he didn’t really like being climbed on by his brothers. He’s also a bit of a solitary pig, he didn’t really interact much with his brothers, or even other piggies (my sister has a pair of boys). He seems quite happy to be on his own. So I’m at a loss as to what to do. I don’t want Bertie to be unhappy and miss out on a friend, but I’m not keen to adopt more. I don’t regret adopting my boys, but it’s been really stressful and I’m emotionally devastated by them passing. Has anyone got any advice please?

I’m so sorry for your losses.

The last piggy always poses a bit of a dilemma If you don’t wish to continue the piggy cycle.

Given a trio of boars almost never works out then him living on his own is more about the failure in compatibility than him choosing to be solitary. They would have used smell and sight to communicate so he would have been interacting with them even though it may not have been in a way we, as people, can see.

If you live with your sister, is there any way you can move his cage to be next to your sister’s piggies? This can mean he isn’t alone and will be an acceptable way for him to spend the rest of his life.

If not, then some rescue centres allow fostering. You foster a piggy to bond with your remaining piggy and upon you losing your piggy, you hand the foster piggy back. Thereby ensuring your piggy has company for the rest of his life but you aren’t continuing your piggy cycle.

Thanks, I live too far away from my sister for him to live next to her piggies. They’d be neighbours when I was around for a visit. I’ll look into fostering though. That might work well.

So sorry you have lost two of your boys x
I would definitely reach out to rescues. Email them your situation. There may well be a single piggie out there who is desperate for a little side by side friend x
