How on earth will this work? Does it mean you could be prosecuted for keeping a lone boar as it wouldn't be in the company or its own species?

The Duty of Care which was introduced with the updated animal welfare bill states that it is the responsibility of the owner to ensure that your pet must be kept with, or separate from other individuals as appropriate.

There is nothing to say specificcally rabbits and guinea pigs at this moment in time, and there is basically no way they could be prosecuted under current legislation, because keeping them together has been such common practice and there will still be places recommending it.

However, it will be interesting to see what happens when the individual species Codes of Practice are brought out - the rabbit one is currently under consultation, and it may well state on there that rabbits should not be kept with guinea pigs. But then again, it may not. If it is stated in the COPs, then they may have an obligation to separate them. However, if it is not mentioned, then I suspect there will be no legal action which could be taken.

That will be a hard one to police though, It will have to start in the shops,

The RSPCA are recommending this to DEFRA for the update this year along with the housing etc. The guidelines for guineas is on the RSPCA site and its those that will go to DEFRA. Its DEFRA that will make the law not the RSPCA. This should make things easier for Inspectors to get animals out of bad situations, not necessarily mean that all guineas housed singly will be brought into the RSPCA!

Karen your inbox is full :) and i never meant all singles ie boars that dont get along, he said something like they should be kept with company of there own species if they can be and it works both ways ie would be against the law to house 2 syrians :)
