I got my free sample of pellets, the blackcurrent ones, and they sent a lovely leaflet with it. This statement is printed inside;

"Vets recommend that all guinea pigs should be neutered. It not only prevents unwanted pregnancies , it will also make your pets calmer and less aggressive."

Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Disagree.

It's almost like they're trying to make out guinea pigs are more like rabbits, who do need neutering/spaying on behaviour grounds.

Not the case with guineas, most of us know that neutering doesn't affect behaviour. I have two intact boys who are hugely softer and calmer than many of my neutered boys! Yes, neuter to render them infertile so they can live with sows, but to suggest neutering as standard practice and to suggest neutering to make them calmer just isn't worth it - either at this stage (when there aren't enough competent vets to make this a practice) or at all.

I think Burgess have slipped up a little on that. I can kinda see why they put it, but in reality, it's just not right in my eyes.

Completely disagree, from experience I have seen that neutering does not alter their behaviour. Like Laura I have 2 un-neutered as well and their past the 'teenage' stage and they are both big softies :)
I would be very interested to see where they got their information from.

What a load of rubbish, I wish these companies would do their research. But what can you expect from a company that would have you feeding buckets of dried food rather than just sticking healthy greens and hay.

Some people might read that as females need to be neutered too, which of course is ridiculous.

Complaint time I think!

Disagree. Guineas and anaesthetic are so risky as it is, doubt its a good idea for un-necessary ops to take place. Fair enough if living with females, but I’d be weary.
When I was working in the vets, I read a guinea leaflet out on display and that said to neuter to calm guineas behaviour (might have been the same leaflet), I asked the nurse if it was true and they were a bit doubtful about it.

This might be controversial but I don't completely disagree. I have two neutered boys, one is completely 'typically' a boy, he chases females around and tries to mount them. My other neutered boy, well, I've never seen him rumblestrut and I've had him months! However I'd disagree with them publishing that information on the grounds that unnecessary neutering operations are NOT worth the risk. I lost a boar a few years ago after his neutering operation. Guinea pigs and anaesthetics do not go well together. Several of us have neutered boars on here but I wonder how many operations have actually gone wrong?

Same here. Since they were neutered, Mabelle rumblestruts on occassion for a couple of seconds but I haven't seen him mount or even chase Sasha or Penelope at all and Seymour, he chases Audrey often and rumblestruts a lot but leaves Mushnik completely alone, not sure why!

I think it can have an affect in some cases, but I wouldn't have a piggy neutered in the hope that it would have an affect.... Or should that be effect? rolleyes I can never remember the difference!

I'm with every one on this what complete and utter rubbish ive got a border collie ive had him done and it hasent bloody work so i cant see it working for guinea pigs guinea pigs will live togeather or they wont to me its as simple as that besides if you were to have it done you must be 100% that your vet can and has done these ops on guineas before unless you plan on putting a male and female in the same hutch i wouldnt bother with this procedure best thing i would do is chuck the leaflet in the bin sorry if i come across blunt but when it comes to animals i dont mince my words

You said what I was trying to, but couldn't get my words out, LOL! :)

Even for rabbits they don't have to be neutered to be friendly (but for living together it's better and for health for does) . . .

That reminds me of a woman who always thinks she knows more about animals than everyone and judges everyone else about how they look after their pets . . . she was asking why I wasn't getting my new boar neutered, even though he's old and lives with 2 boys so neutering would be pointless!

It DOES annoy me when people say guineas of the same sex need neutering to live together. That's silly.
