I noticed this morning that rather than peeing, Nelli seems to be leaking urine. She doesn’t seem to have one big wee, but rather over time wherever she is laid, there will be a puddle of pee. Her bottom is also completely soaked because of this.

We called the vet, who said to give her Metacam twice daily, and if it doesn’t improve, to set up an appointment with the exotics vet.

However, over the course of the day I have realised that she is still dripping urine, and we attempted to collect a sample (gave her plenty of fluids before hand) and in about an hour and a half she hasn’t produced anything other than tiny droplets which soaked straight into her fur. She is also VERY smelly - I’m talking fishy, sour smelling urine.

I have some at home urinalysis strips - I couldn’t really take one because she hasn’t peed adequately. However I pressed it against her very wet, pee soaked fur and it came back with elevated leukocytes, nitrites, proteins and ketones. No idea what this means, and if it is a at all useful.

The vets were very clear in saying to wait 24 hours, but will she be okay waiting that lon if she does have a UTI?

My late Erin starting leaking urine and she was soaked in it and smelt bad. An ultrasound and urine analysis revealed she had a bad uti and sludge in her bladder.

Not saying that’s what’s wrong with your piggy but I wouldn’t want to wait

Hi!

Elevated protein levels are usually a sign of infection.

Very fishy smelly fluid could come from the reproductive tract (my Cariad had her womb doing wrong just months after a major bladder stone op) and not necessarily from the urinary tract, so you may want to set up an appointment today or first thing tomorrow.

Hi! We managed to get an appointment at 10am this morning with an exotics specialist - thank the Lord, because Nelli really deteriorated and was struggling overnight.

She has been diagnosed with cystitis (the leaky urine, but also when she does wee it has a pink/red tinge to it). The vet suggests that it is probably as a result of the massive bladder stone she had, wreaking havoc on her urinary tract. We have been given Metacam for pain relief, Baytril (bc Nelli is immunocompromised), and told to keep syringing her water to hopefully dilute the pee and help t move through.

We are also to get back to the vet on Monday, and depending on how Nelli has been doing adjust the plan!

Hi!

I am very sorry; it is not uncommon.

Are you giving glucosamine (cystease) because it is the most effective stuff to help the battered lining of the urinary tract to recover. I can from personal experience say that it really makes a difference.

Yes I have been giving it consistently!

Poor thing... I'm glad you saw a vet and got some answers. One of my pigs who had chronic bladder issues got 'leaky' in her old age. Cystease and antibiotics to treat any underlying infection is probably the best thing, so it sounds like you're doing all the right stuff for her.

The poor thing has started peeing blood, and is clearly in quite a lot of pain 😓 she’s barely walking, and when she is she’s walking with her legs out, I presume her “bits” hurt 😓
