Junior Guinea Pig
Hi all
I just wanted to say how much I've learnt about Guinea Pigs and their care over the years and this forum really helps.
I didn't get my first pigs until I was 16 and although I was doing a diploma in animal care I didn't know anything about home size etc for them. Luckily I knew about food/hay/having a run on the grass for them but me and my parents really were novices. My grandad made me a hutch 1 metre by 50cm for 2 boys! I had no idea 2 boys might not get on and luckily they did. My parents would have thought a bigger home was excessive and not needed! (They are big animal lovers but typically came from the generation that used small hutches.) They soon realised how much our first pigs enjoyed running around the run and my dad would be first to put them out in the morning!
That was 17 years ago and now I have 4 sows living happily together in a 25 square foot hutch and run and indoor area for winter.
I still class myself as a novice as I've only had 8 pigs over the years and there's loads I still don't know.
I believe in giving the best care possible to any animal you take on. That's the joy I get from having animals- to see that how I'm caring for them makes them happy and healthy!
i love seeing so many new piggie owners asking for advice on here. It counteracts every time I go to p@h and see someone walking out with a small cage and lone piggy (especially at the moment with school hols - once they go back to school/work what is the likelihood they don't have time for lone pig anymore and it ends up for sale on the web somewhere)
