I have been both looking forward to and dreading the 13th of September for a while. I’m moving away to University and so have to leave the pigs at home with my parents.

I know that they will be cared for and loved just the same (my parents have always been actively involved with looking after them and my Dad has a particular soft spot for Daphne!), but I feel so upset at having to leave them.

The piggies have currently moved house, in to a 4X2 C&C cage (complete with 2X1 hayloft!) which is in my room, so I have no worries about the amount of attention they will receive etc. I’m leaving written instructions on their care (just in case) and links to guinealynx and this forum.

Does anyone have experience with leaving their piggies for any prolonged length of time?

I left Ditto for 2 weeks last year to go on holiday and it killed me especially when i was in caravan relaxing and would usually have ditto sprawled across my tummy,, I'm sure your parents will take good care of them and you can visit at weekends?

My loan is pathetically small and my course has a reputation for being very intensive, so I'll be lucky to get home once a month. 8...

I was in the same position as you back in 2001 when I left to go to University. I didn't have piggies back then but did have a rabbit who was my life. His name was Casper and he lived in a hutch in the shed. Thankfully, my parents especially my mum loved him almost as much as me.

I had to leave him for the four years whilst I was away. I am not going to pretend it wasn't hard as it was but I always looked forward to seeing him when I went home in the holidays and my parents gave me regular updates.

oh dear I'm sorry to hear that i dont know what i would do ... how long have you had the piggys? i mean i dont mean to cause offence or upset you in any way or form but if you knew you would eventually be wanting to go away to uni, and that piggys can live to the ripe old age of 8-9 years old surely you knew this situation would arise one day and perhaps shouldnt have bothered with pets until uni etc was over and done with and life more settled.. i know that doesnt help the situation now but i try and think years ahead when taking on a new animal, if things change that are out of our control like losing your home or job etc then that cannot be helped but such as uni you must have known for a few years this is where you wanted your life to go.. hope you dont take that the wrong way as it wasnt intended to sound mean but I'm just trying to say this heartache could of been avoided.. 8...

This has actually upset me. I clearly look after them very well and have already said my parents are actively involved in looking after them, too. Before getting the girls we sat and talked about me moving away and agreed it was still something that we all wanted to do. They are part of our family - we all love and look after them.

i once went on holiday for 5 week with my parents when i was younger, and left my piggies in the hands of my Nan. Everyday i would ring and see if they where okay and asked what they where doing.

Maybe you could ask your parents to send pictures every week by email so you know what they are doing.

I am sure they will be fine with your parents :)

are you going far to uni?

I think that this is a very unfair post - the piggies will be lovingly cared for by her family, not rehomed!
I was in the position of leaving my beloved dog (a family pet, but my best friend all the same) - in fact, she died 10 years ago and I still miss her from time to time!
What I would say is that going away to Uni is such an amazing time and you'll be meeting so many new people, that you might not find it as dreadfully painful as you're probably fearing. Sure, you'll miss them loads, but you know that your parents will be taking fab care of them and they'll be able to keep you fully updated - maybe they could even Skype you?
Good luck at Uni and try not to worry too much! :)

Awwww don't worry you'll have plenty of holidays at uni, so plenty of oppotunities to come home and spoil them rotton :))

I was in this position about a year ago!

We only had 1 piggy at the time, Poggle and I missed him dreadfully at the start, though I knew full well he was being loved and snuggled by my mum at home.

I won't pretend like you wont miss them, but you'll find a new way of thinking about them :) I couldn't wait to see them whenever I had a chance to come home. It was something to look forward too! Just make sure your folks send you lots of pics and updates!

Thank you for the postive comments, guys. :)
BlueDreamer I'm headed 55 miles away to The University of Manchester.
I didn't think about Skype, actually! Imagine their little piggy lips on the webcam! x)

On the subject of Skype.... My Poggle appeared for chats occasionally. In the first week or so he'd squeal whenever he heard my voice, it did actually break my heart lol! :(

Aww Poggle! x)x)
Mine tend to squeak like mad when I say "What's wrong piggles!?". My neighbours will think I'm mad!
