My husband and I have been invited to a friend's house tomorrow night to stay over and I'm in a bit of a quandary over what to do with the pigs. I originally planned to take them with us and set them up in their holiday home (140cm pre-formed jobby) but it's about an hour and a half in the car then into a house with a terrier-cross dog and lodging in a room with two ferrets - I can just sense a disaster (plus a lot of stress on the piggies)!

If I were to give them their veggies as normal before we go tomorrow evening and give them piles of extra hay, extra pellets, refilled water bottles and some nibblety treats in their cage, would they be alright left overnight until late morning on New Year's Day?

I think either way I'm going to be worrying about them but at least there's nothing in my house that could potentially break in and eat them! :(

I think they should be okay leaving them that long with plenty of food and water. It would be much better for them that the stress of moving.

They should be totally ok if you give them all the food they need (the veggies, pellets and as much hay as you can). I honestly find it quite risky to bring them to that house, specially because of the ferrets.

I don't like leaving Teddy alone, but this summer I was forced to do it, I had my brother's wedding, so I had no one to left Teddy with. Me and my family left at 11 in the morning and we were back at our house at 1am. I gave him the veggies and pellets (more than usual, pellets, not veggies) before I left, and he had two hay bags as full as they could be. He was perfectly fine (still, I was thinking about him all the day).

Hey Hun,

How you doin?...to be honest I have left my piggies overnight with no problems. Extra water bottle for the thirsty crew, and all the usual food etc. as they are indoor, there are no issues.
Don't fret, enjoy your friends company!

Thank you everyone :) I have no experience, but imagine this might actually be worse than leaving your kids alone in the house overnight for the first time - at least they can call for help! :))

I can't leave mine overnight due to having 7 on heart meds, but I think in your case leaving them at home with plenty of hay and water and their veg would be the less stressful option for them with there being a terrier in the house you are going to.

I'm sure that your guinea pigs will be fine!

However, please make adequate provisions in the event of fireworks!

I don't do it very often, but have left my boys overnight with no problems. I leave extra pellet feed and extra hay. I just leave the regular amount of veggies, as they probably won't eat them all at once and I don't want them to have a lot of wilted veggies sitting around. I have both free-rangers and pigs in cages and I really think they know when I come home, I'll give them extra treats (melon, grapes, etc), out of guilt!

They don't seem to be overly bothered by fireworks but I will make sure they have extra snuggly copies and lots of hay to burrow in :)

I have left mine overnight and worried the whole time. I came home the next morning and they just looked at me like "did you bring me veggies". They were totally fine. There was even food still in the bowls!

I certainly wouldn't risk it with ferrets or the dog. Ferrets are sneaky little things and that dog breed tend to go for small animals more than most breeds. I'd be too scared to risk it.

They should be fine overnight as long as you give them a ton of food and aren't home too late the next day. :) If its more of 20 hours you're away maybe you could just ask a neighbour or nearby relative to pop over.

As soon as the ferrets were mentioned I was like "gaaaaaah" - hopefully the pigs don't think I'm a bad mummy for leaving them all on their own but it really is the lesser of two evils!

Well I have to leave mine when I go to work. I leave at 6.30am and get back at about 7pm. I make sure they have enough hay water and warm bedding. They are OK just a bit noisy when one of them hears me come in and starts wheeking. My brother used to have ferrets and even if the guinea pigs were in a different room in the house their smell could upset your piggies.

I've left my piggies overnight in the past (not these two). It's never been a big deal/stress for them (you are bound to worry a bit tho as you love them). Personally I was more comfortable leaving them in the safety of their house cage rather than outside in a hutch. You can buy time release feeding bowls too. I hope everything went okay for you. Just seen your last message - all good x

It is only a small amount of time in their life, with all their food. I can see the cheeky monkeys were not bothered at all about being left!
