Just visited the vets with one of my pigs LB -he was neutered last thursday and up until saturday evening he appeared to be getting back to normal. However when he ignored his evening veg i started syringe feeding him critical care every 2-3hrs along with giving him fiberplex.

After no improvement we took him to the vets - he was quite active when they allowed him to run around (however, at home he just lounges around, not really doing anything apart from sleeping - but we initially put this down to the pain relief wearing off and he maybe feeling a little sore) the vets cannot understand why he was eating after the op thursday afternoon, friday, and saturday morning/afternoon but has suddenly stopped eating.

He's been given gut stimulants and baytril by injection and we've been given baytril oral to start tomorrow (0.2ml twice daily) - we've also been given lectade powder - the instructions say to mix both sachets together in 500ml of water - if he's not drinking for himself then to syringe him the solution - exactly how much water should he realistically be syringed over 24hrs? 500ml seems an awful lot of water and LB really isn't a big drinker, if he drinks less than a quarter of a normal sized bottle per day that's all....

lectade is not something i have heard of but regarding the amount of water he needs pigs need 80ml of fluid daily to maintainn hydration levels, this includes the moisture contained in veggies, grass and syringe food. have you been given more pain meds too?

Not too sure how i missed this reply....?

I made the solution up according to the packet, but he never drank any of it - i tried syringing it to him but it would just come back out of his mouth...

He was booked in for an x-ray on wednesday as i noticed him squeaking whilst going to the toilet, he was dropped off at 9am and proceeded to eat everything the vets gave him, so rather than stressing him out by having to perform an x-ray (they would have needed to sedate him because he isn't the most relaxed piggie they've dealt with) they monitored him for 24hrs and he appeared perfectly fine, no squeaking, in fact he loved the fact the vets kept up the daily tradition of freshly cut grass :)

So we've been monitoring him closely for the last two days and he appears to be back to his normal self :) His wound is healing nicely and in 5 wks time he'll have a couple of girls to keep him company- he's met the girls between the cage bars and he's a bit puzzled by them to be honest....

Poor little lad :( are you sure he wasn't trying to get to the vets deliberately for the fresh grass rolleyes :) glad he is getting better

glad to hear he is back to his usual self :) those post opp days can be a worrying time. i am sure all will become clear to him once there are no bars seperating him from the ladies :))

Knowing LB you could be right - he's a cheeky little piggie ;)

His father was neutered a week earlier and we had to clam him down after his op - he was running around his cage and eating everything in sight, the complete opposite to LB :{

LB has never even been near a female piggie - he was separated from his mum and sister at 3wks old and up until 6months ago (he'll be 3yrs old the end of may) he was living as a bonded pair with his father - so they never had so much as a whiff of a female piggie - it's all a bit alien to him tbh, he's not sure what to do, he has the odd rumble at them, but he walks away from their cage when they show some interest in him - trying to lick him through the cage bars....lol

I'm hoping this means he'll be very gentle with them - only female I'm worried about is JJ, she needs a calm but confident male. not one she can push around, Dappy soon learned how to keep his girls in check ;) Let's hope Homer and LB will be the same!
