This evening I have noticed Sam limping and not weight bearing on his left forelimb.

I've made a vet appt for tomorrow so just keeping him comfy this evening.

The only thing I can think of that could have caused this is that his hay is given in a small litter tray but he jumps in/out of it.

My guineas are housed on fleece so I use the trays to keep the hay contained. What do other people use as I don't want him jumping around now and kind of want to remove all trays as I'm paranoid.

I am sorry your piggie is lame. Hopefully it is something minor, and he will be right as rain in a few days.

I have seen a few set ups that use littler trays for hay, and then people cut out a small entry door, so the guinea pigs can just walk right in. Maybe you could try this?

But it really is impossible to remove all risk.
Honestly sometimes the way my lot popcorn and zoom about the place I think it is a miracle they aren't all carrying permanent injuries.
Sometimes, no matter what we do, accidents happen, and it sounds like this might just be one of those unfortunate but unavoidable accidents.

Gentle hugs for you and Sam.

:agr:

I would imagine Sam is a bit sore tonight so doubt he will be jumping on and off things. You are right to get him a vet appointment .

Sprains and twisted joints are not at all rare in lively guinea pigs. All it takes is a bad landing after a jump!

Hopefully, it is just a mild sprain somewhere on the leg between the spine and foot that will right itself soon! It is however good to have it checked by a vet.

Toby has sprained his front legs fairly regularly as he is s bit of a lunatic when it comes to playtime. He has just had quite a bad one that took us back to the vets for a fresh bottle of metacam. Our instructions are usually to give him metacam for 5 days and if there is no improvement to take him back for X-rays - I have never had to take him back. Hopefully Sam will recover just as quickly.

may be worth checking the pads of the foot! l had a limping pig once and it was due to a pad problem

I've checked the pad and all is ok . It seems to be the ankle which is swollen slightly. I've taken his tray out as he was still jumping around. Ive put the hay on the floor. I've also tipped his pellets onto the floor as he was struggling with the bowl. He's now happily lying down eating pellets from the floor! Fingers crossed it's just a sprain.

Well Sam went to the vets yesterday and she was worried he had broken or dislocated something due to the position of his leg. He had conscious xrays and thankfully neither found. He's to be restricted and on metacam to see if he improves.. Fingers crossed.

Glad it's nothing serious, but how on earth do you restrict a guinea pig?
Sounds like a total nightmare!
