Hi,

I have a guinea pig who has seen the vet already. His knees are swollen on his back legs. One is alot worse than the other. He barely walks on it at all. He is in for xrays tomorrow if it is still swollen.

I have no idea how this happened...

But the vet couldn't feel any broken bones... but said it.could be a greenstick fracture or he may have dislocated something...

Has anyone had this with their piggies? And can they tell me the process and their experiences and what I can do to help my boy please, I have moved him into a small 2ft by 2ft area without his companion.

How do they treat these types of fractures and how do they sort dislocations?

Thank you in advance.

An old friend had a pig with a dislocated shoulder and his arm would stick out at an angle so it looked like he was waving. I think he used to have water therapy which helped. I remember him having the odd operation (it was years ago) but I think that was for an unrelated lump. Is he on any anti-inflammatories?

How old if your piggie?
If both back legs are swollen it could also be something like arthritis.
Obviously it is important to rule out fractures, but if nothing shows up on the x-ray then a course of anti inflammatories (usually Metcam) might help him too.
Is he on a soft bedding like fleece?
Hopefully your vet will be able to gt to the bottom of the problem quickly for you and your piggie.

Yes, i've never experienced fractures, or any other bone issues on pigges (excluding my poor boy who had bone cancer in his knee). But I have found that arthritis seems to be quite common on older piggies lower back/ hind legs. Hopefully it is only that as it is quite easy to manage!

My pig is only 3 months old so i dobut it would be arthritis. He is on metacam atm for the swelling and antibiotics to stop any kind of bone infections. The vet saw him today and said the swelling has reduced considerably and he didn't think a xray would be necessary, I have another check up next week. So fingers crossed he will be much better and anything that has happened is healing well still.

I moved him into a 2ft by 2ft area and he is on blankets with hay. Today he has been popcorning alot which I think is a good sign. But it is also weird to watch him do it as he does it very weird

If this was a dislocation would it be possible it's gone back in by itself? And now it's just very sore?
