Hi All,

Just went to feed the pigs and noticed that Lyra has a bald section on her rump, checked all others and found Leia with the same problem she has lost a lot more hair than Lyra. They were fine yesterday, they are still eating like their is no tomorrow.

So last time with Cuzzy I took him to the vet and now I'm a bit confused about the whole mite issue to inject or to treat with Xeno. If they are treated with Xeno do I buy and treat and home or is this still a vet job!

Either way I don't mind just looking for the best plan of action. I think I know what has stressed them...the demon pig known as Pearl! She is a bully so I was wondering would I need to keep this two seperate from her? Elora is fine with my other four. Or would you think they would be fine in the herd once the mites have healed?

Thanks in advance,

Louise

Can anyone advise, just not sure which best route to take? Heard people say no need for injections and others say injections is the best route.

Thanks, sorry to whine on. Bit gutted that they aren't feeling tip top if I am honest. :(

I'm not great with advice but i had the injections for Lincoln and they didnt seem to work so i used the xeno home stuff and he as great after that so i wont go back to injections. Just my opinion anyway x

Thanks Chez. I did the injections with Cuzzy although after a sellotape skin scrape thingy the vet said he wasn't sure if it was mites but would treat him so. But Lyra and Leia do have the hair loss and dandruff so it is defo that. The thing is if they have the injections 10 days after is Chrimbo day so they won't get it on time.

Is it Xeno 450?

When Spicey most likely had mites he had xeno450 from the vet...
Injections are painful, xeno450 does the job and is not painful

Thanks Helen, I will get some from my vet tomorrow once he has looked at them. :)

Rung vets they are getting me some for tomorrow. Girls are happy enough running abut mad, just acting the same. I expect when Cuzzy had them I noticed it before the hairloss because he was being groomed more being a Sheltie and as the girls are in the shed they aren't getting cuddles as much so they have started loosing hair.
Hopefully they will be as right as rain soon. No others are affected up to now.

Where does the Xeno go is it all over or just where they have lost hair? And also do I have to wear gloves? Sorry for all the questions! :)

I'm sorry to butt in but I've never had problems with mites. I just don't get what they are? My Bert has dandruff and a scabby on his back that releases yet more flakes. Vet said not mites and gave me iodine solution to clean his overzealous cebaceous gland. The hair is more shiny after 2 applications but Bertie hates baths and I'm concerned he'll end up with mites anyway.... any advice? ?/:Ayociexp113:

Sorry Sunshine, I can't help...

Mites live under the skin they come out in times of stress. They appear mostly on the rump and cause itching, hair loss and appear like dandruff.

Not sure what to suggest, Cuzzy wasn't showing as mites but had the scabs and dandruff was treated for mites and that worked. One thing is though its not good to bath them all the time. :)

it's just the read end I have to clean with this iodine solution... Anything else to suggest? What is Xeno?

OH dam Lou so sorry to hear :{:{
all the very very best for little Leia and Lyra sending healing wheeeeeeeeks for them both xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

Thanks Glynis. Lyra is looking like she has lost more hair today but no open cuts so caught it early. http://www.guinealynx.info/mites.html just read this, up to speed on Xeno now so hopefully they will be right as rain soon!

You do beat yourself up don't you? Because you think why didn't I notice it sooner but they were both fine on Saturday it was only yesterday they were starting to loose fur!

Mrs M Xeno is a treatment for mites, read the link its all in there. It saves giving them injections which can be painful. :)

awww Lou, they'll be fine soon xx

Sending hugs and kisses, hope they get better soon xoxoxoxo

I've read the link and cannot find anything on Xeno. Can I get itwithout prescription? My hubby gets rashes after being in direct contact with piggies as described for fur mites... I'm dead concerned now. My piggies have always been prodigious scratchers, but never to the point of flaking or scabbbing, until now... :...:...:... I feel like a super bad mommy... With the amount of money I spend on vet fees, I'm rather annoyed! :Ayociexp121:

AW Lou i just found this! i am so sorry to hear about Leia and Lyra. I hope their mites will clear up soon with Xeno. DId you say you got yours from the vet? Cant you get it online? xx

Yep you can get it online. I'm weary of that though, you can get it without prescription. Its not cheap, cheapest I found was £16.00 Mrs M Google Xeno 450 you should find something there. :)

yeah thats why I'm a bit cautious getting online lou. Well good luck with it! poor little sweeties! x

I'm going to see first with the iodine solution and take Bert back to vet if needed at end of week. It'll be chaos with chrimbo round the corner and my tribe invading on 23rd, but piggies' needs come first!

PS: since reading link on mites, I've been scratching and itching like mad!:(

Haha I know I get itchy thinking about it. Yeah defo take vets advice. I'm whizzing the girls up there later just to have it confirmed and I can collect the stuff in the morning. I would have gone for the injections but my vets is closed over Chrimbo and it clashes with the time they are supposed to have them so this is easier all round.

Such an awkward time! I think what I will do is house Elora, Lyra and Leia away from the other 4 girls obviously there is something going amiss with them and something has spooked them, probably some bullying going on which has stressed them! :{

Ah thanks! :) Just tucked them up for the night, they are munching on their veggies, a little slower than usual but I think they must be feeling a little tender rather than unwell.

Thanks for all your well wishes, it's quite upsetting as Lyra has such a lovely coat with them both being teddies and to see her looking almost like a skinny pig makes her looks so vulnerable, I've but extra hay in to keep them warm.

Thanks for all your help Fi! :) Yep Helen Fi gave me a great website for it. I took the pair of the to the vet earlier just to be sure that is what it is and yep it is the dreaded mites.

He said they look worse than they are and as they are eating try not to worry...easier said than done! He is going to drop the xeno off in the morning on the way to opening up, very good of him. Good to have a nice vet.

Also he seemed to think the cold weather plays a factor I have changed their cage too so perhaps the cold snap and the change could have upset them. They are well cosy in the shed though but still I'll bring them in tomorrow.

Ah I'm such a worry wart aren't I! Hope you had a good trip Helen, I ended up just going to Lime Street with my Great aunt, she wouldn't hear of me taking her home to Wales and there was me thinking I was going to get out of not having the kids all night! :D x

i know i said it on facebook but diont blame youself for not spotting it...animals go downhill fast - samson (bun) seemed fine one daym, next day he'd lost weight, fur, and looked like an rspca case or siomething!sam, our felmale had been bullying him.

we split them up brought him inside, and he soon pile dteh weight back on, but for the fur we had to see the vet which we were [proper worried about as he looked so mistreated. thankfully teh vet knows us well and sees all our animals regular, and consoled us in teh fact animals do deteriorate v fast.

the stress had set off both fur mites and cancarur (ear mites) in samson, but liek with yoru piggies no open wounds so had only just come about. cos of teh cost (as samsons alot bigger thabn a piggie at 5 kilo in weight lol) the vet recommended jabs. thankfuilly samsons not bothered by jabs, but iot did mean returning the vets twice fro follow ups (they have to do a jab every two weeks until they've had three jabs),

he had his last jab today and his coats come on well, ad his ears too. but i aint half paranoid., i keep checkling all teh animals (piggies an dbuns).

my vet did say all animals carry mite san dtehy just come out in time sof severe stress. he also mentioned there can be times when mites come in in the hay. so a si said at the start, dont blame yourself you acted as soon as you could when you noticed!

Thanks becks! :) Aww Hope Sampson is feeling better now. I've Domino here at the mo, the school bunny! Oh shes a madam! Doesn't like her water bottle so messed with it so much that she drops it on the floor all the time! Attention seeking me thinks, probably because she doesn't get a lot of love at school. her claws are getting clipped on Saturday I suspect she will bite me! Shes gorgeous though!

I've a 4x2 animal arc for the girls to live in in my utility room so think I will do that for them for the winter. They will be more cosy in there even though they have snug cuddle cups to sleep in and igloos stuffed with hay in the shed. Little monkeys! :)

When Georgie had mites, he went from scratching a bit to having a bald spot within a couple of days!

If you have any lavender and myrrh lotion or neem from GG, it can help ease the skin but wait for 48 hours after giving ivermectin before applying anything :)

You do beat yourself up don't you? Because you think why didn't I notice it sooner but they were both fine on Saturday it was only yesterday they were starting to loose fur!

:)

Don't though, as we all know how piggies can be ok one day, and not the next. You are a kind and loving owner and should feel proud of yourself.

Hope all goes well with the treatment for mites.
