This morning I heard that Lentil had a blocked nose. I picked him up and couldnt hear it and I put a little vick on his nose and then he was fine and was munching away on his romaine lettuce and hay.

Could it just of been a bit of dust up his nose? Ive had plenty of experience with guineas with URI's in the past so I am aware of the symptoms and treatment etc.

This is the first time I've heard him with a stuffy nose since I got him at the end of October.

Can they justt get a blocked nose without all of a sudden thinking - OH GOD URI!

Hes eyes are clear, nose isn't running, breathing sounds fine (but could obv hear it when he had his blocked nose).

I would not worry - blocked noses from dust are not that rare!

If you suspect URI, you are looking out for a combination of at least two of the symptoms listed. However, in that case you need to see a vet as soon as possible.

Agree with Wiebke. I know the instinct is to think URI but from you've written, I think you've got a dust-sensitive piggy.

Obviously, if you are worried, a trip to the vet for nothing is always better than not going when needed - that's my general rule. You could try a dust-extracted hay in the future to see if there's a change in reaction...

Same has happened to me this week with Bailey...I think in my case it is fabric conditionerbthat sets him off becoming very "nasally noisy"

S0.... I am now putting in his cage:
  • a tupperware with kitchen towel in the bottom
  • add Vicks vapourbath and hot water to saturate the paper towel
  • Add a pierced lid

I've put this in his cage tonight and...well, it's worked before:
