Horrible title !
yesterday, my two boys were diagnosed with an early stages of URI. Green discharge, no crush though, sneezing. And warm temps.
well, we were given .1 ml of baytril and .1 ml of doxycycline for 14 days.
my thing is, after two doses they seem to be pooping a little less than yesterday morning.
Is there anything more I can do?
They ARE on Bene Bac twice a day after the antibiotics!

I have a New piggie in quarantine because she also had an URI when I adopted her. And I think they got some bacteria from her. They’re all being treated the same.

Hi!

The poop amount reflects the food intake from 1-2 days ago. In order to check the current food intake, please always switch from their once weekly regular weigh-in to weighing daily at the same time.
Weight - Monitoring and Management

Please keeping in mind that the need to breathe comes before the need to drink and only thirdly the need to eat. In combination with an antibiotic, treatment of respiratory illnesses is unfortunately a double whammy for their appetite.
Please also be aware that 80% or more of the daily food intake is hay, which you cannot control by eye.
If your piggies have lost over 50g with an ongoing downhill trend, then I would start offer them top feed, either recovery formula, mushed up pellets or a mix; offer just additionally to their normal feed 2-3 times and only as much as they take willingly.

Probiotics are a support measure but unfortunately no guarantee against a diminished appetite.

How long have they been on the baytril?

This is their third course this morning.

That is too short a space of time yet for any significant improvement of the illness.

Please do NOT stop the antibiotic and if necessary tough it out with feeding support - use your kitchen scales as a measure to judge whether additional feeding support and how much is needed. the appetite should return to normal in the days after end of the course of antibiotics.

URI can potentially kill or permanently damage but loss of appetite is only a temporary, if unpleasant, problem.

All the best!

Weighing the last two days, one has dropped about 25 g, but I’m aware that’s in the range of normal, and I’ll keep an eye on everything. They’re not turning down food, but are a little more thirsty than normal. So I will weigh daily.

At this stage, the impact is small and what is to be expected. I would not step in with offering extra food to what they are eating and just monitor once daily.

Hopefully their breathing will start to improve from tomorrow onward. You may see more quishy poos on baytril, but this tends to normalise once the course stops.

He’s maintaining weight, difference is between 8g. But now is having the mushy poops you described.
His breathing is normal, from what I can tell. And no more sneezing/discharge when I look over them!
