Hi,

My guinea pig Dunkin has been lethargic in the afternoon the past couple of days. He is eating normally, peeing and pooping normally, drinking water, and runs around when I take him out. The only difference is he seems lethargic when in his cage. He’s been sleeping outside of his house and it has been in the hundreds the past couple of days. Could the weather or boredom be a reason?

@Adrianna2611 has a real health concern about her piggie @Piggie Smalls. You shouldn't make fun of it. We are a family friendly forum here to help others when they have a problem. Yes we do like to have our fun but only when appropriate and having a health concern with a piggy certainly isn't the time!

How is Dunkin now @Adrianna2611? Have you tried putting an old plastic bottle filled with water into the freezer, freezing it, wrapping it up with a towel and placing it in the cage? Some piggies like that as it cools the environment and they go and lie next to it. Mine however treat it like it's going to eat them and stay as far away as possible from it.

Thank you! He is doing better. Once it cooled down he perked up. I’ll try the water bottle trick if it happens again

Hi!

Please take the time to read out hot weather advice and learn to spot the signs of overheating and heat stroke. Make sure that you switch from weighing once weekly to weighing daily at the same time as you cannot control the hay intake just by eye - and it is making 80% of what your piggy should eat in a day. I have included vital information and tips on how to keep your living space as cool as possible in addition to the usual measures.
Hot Weather Management, Heat Strokes and Fly Strike

If you have excluded any health issues, then please look for companionship. Guinea pigs are group animals with very complex social interaction and stimulation derived from that.

Tried that once with my piggies but one treated it as a piece of kale! The towel was nibbled and same with the bottle. Ended up having to move their house so it was in a cooler spot during the summer and back in the winter. On really warm days I take them out on to the cooling blanket and put crushed ice cubes in their water. (I’ve checked they won’t be able to choke on it.) and give them cucumber (in moderation) and they love it! They also like kale with cold water on it.

I hope Dunkin feels better soon!
Sending healing wheeks :luv:

Hope Dunkin feels better.
I use freezer packs wrapped in tea towels when it gets too hot for mine. I have a long haired piggies who loves to lay her head on the ice pack.
