Ive just read on a website that Iceburg lettuce has no nutritional value for pigs. Is this the case? we give our pigs loads of it, but if it's not giving them the vit C they need then we need to change to something else as Lenny is prone to getting ill.
Does anyone have any good suggestions to give to supply them with regular vit C?

ALSO we think our housemate might have given our pigs an apple core earlier... are the pips guna make them ill?
Thanks :)x

Hi hollive,

you are right Iceburg has no nutritional value, it really should not be feed to piggies eventhough the love it!

a good replacement is broccoli, bell pepper, a small carrot or curly kale

apple are fine as well and grapes and melon

I feed round lettuce, romaine and curly. But lettuce for them is like chocolate for us. :) The food link is a good starting place. :)

there is another thred with this on - may be worth a look, but iceberg contains 'laundum' (guineapiglopedia not sure what page) which makes them sleepy and you should avoid feeding it - if you do feed them iceberg then keep it to a minimum and in very small amounts - stick with the darker green lettuces. :)

You shouldn't feed your piggies iceberg. The other alternatives that people have mentioned are ok tho.

Thanks guys all this help is great! :)
tried peppers, but the pigs don't really like them.
They only ever really finish their veggies if they're lettuce. Guna try some broccolli tonight to see if they like that!

mine like pak choi, corn on the cob, LOVE cucumber, sweetheart cabbage and/or greens, celery.

Gps should not be given iceburg lettuce as it is very high in nitrates. Other lettuces are fine as a treat 2 or 3 times a week. The only variety of lettuce that has vitimin C is romaine.

Apple pips should not be eaten by gps or anyone as because they contain strychnine!.

Parsley, spring greens, tomato, peppers, brocoli, kale, coriander, celery all have a high lev el of vitimin C
