whats the best kind for them, I know iceburg is bad but is green leaf better then romaine, is red better then green leaf...etc

just wondering if theres a difference

i have been told that all lettuces are bad for guineapigs, it gives them diahreah and can damage something in their body...I don't feed my guineapigs lettuce at all. (i read this information from abook)

hmm, I give mine lettuce as well as other things but I haven't seen any diarrhea, I'm pretty sure that book is wrong, its only iceburg that is a trouble because of its high water content

Lettuce is a bit like chocolate is for us, but then so is Spinach, Watercress, Kale and cabbage. It's everything in moderation. If you feed cabbage in excess it will give them wind. Too much lettuce will give them upset tummy but they can still be fed it. I give round lettuce ones a week (hot house lettuce is the other name it goes by) When it's cheap enough I give Romaine (Cos) and Curly lettuce too. :)

I start with a base green and then give them another 4 veggies per serving, works for my herd. :)

This is only the case for iceberg which is mostly water and has little nutritional value.

Mine only get lettuce very ocassionally - usually whenever my mum has some left over as it isn't something I would buy for myself so there would be too much for just them.

I have 6 pigs and I share a hearts of romaine lettuce between the 6 of them every day and I have never had any problems. They get 3 or 4 other types of veg or herbs to go with that everyday as well.

i have read in a couple of books that lettuce contains Laudanum (not sure on the spelling) which makes piggies very sleepy... and it is best to avoid it... but i think that the darker green variaties are generally ok as long as not too much is fed... :smitten:

hmm... ok... well perhaps it contains something that makes them a little sleepy :-\ ... i would avoid iceberg... :)

Kale is about the only thing that I can guarantee that Harry will eat.

Read that too in my Guinea Piglopaedia

Quote - ' Lettuce (especially green, leafy types, but not too much as it contains laundanum, which is a sedative)' P37 Feeding Your Cavy.

Ah ha! that's where i read it! i do have a few books, and couldn't put my finger on which one! well.. i guess if you want to keep them quiet! (joke!) lol

Not overly sure what the answer is to the whole lettuce thing now! eeek! so yes i guess a bit like the equivalent to piggy chocolate... not too much! (or any iceberg!) :-*
