Hello everybody.
I have a question about lettuce because I got really confused.. I thought it was safe to feed it to my piggy (he loves it btw) but then I read somewhere that I shouldn't do it with some kinds of lettuce. The thing is,that I live in Greece and I don't know if I should give him the kind of lettuce we have here, which is the common standard lettuce..I'm confused and worried cause he used to eat it every day..
What do you think? Thanks a lot!

i think the main concern is with iceberg lettuce, which has a high water content which acts as a duretic (sp?) which will make piggie wee lots which obviously isnt good for the kidneys etc. Also, the chemicals used to grow the lettuces are dangerous too.
Kos lettuce is fine however. A little treat once a week should be ample, concentrate on other low calcium veggiesd (see the shopping list) and buy organic if you can.

Iceberg lettuce is the one to avoid; as someone once said, it is effectively "crunchy water"!

Other lettuces - batavia, round, romaine, red, lambs lettuce, little gem, mizuna, etc. - are fine and can be fed every day.

Yes must agree with everyone, iceberg is definately the one to avoid, I did feed it, but as I hate it myself as its so tasteless and watery I know its not doing them any good, now they get things like romaine, cos, round etc:)

Thank you all so much! I don't really know which one is the iceberg lettuce so I think I'd better stick to parsley and celery leaves :)

Iceberg lettuce is a big round lettuce and its light green colour.
My 2 love little gem's which they have everyday.

xx

Goofy just loves Romaine lettice and that's one of his favourire veg. I also read somewhere that Iceberg lettice is a big NO NO.

Oh this is really interesting, I thought basic geen lettuce was a no no due to it containing "cyanide" type chemicals naturally, but iceberg was alright! Not that they have any as I grow the mixed salad leafs which I have to fight them over to get a look in! Thanks everyone, will make sure "Granny" doesn't give them any when she baby sits them.
