Lice - any ideas?

Andersons

I`ve noticed very small crawly type things which I assume are lice on my piggies. I`ve bought some `small animal` insecticide shampoo for rabbits and piggies.

Anyone know of another idea to get rid of them and a way of keeping them away?

Lice and Easy from Gorgeous Guineas sorted my boys out in a couple of weeks, the vet was a bit dubious about it working but she was impressed a couple of weeks later when she could see no sign of them, just a shame Woody had mites at the same time.

Good Luck.

Insecticidal shampoo is usually the best solution (lice'n'easy from gorgeousguineas.com is the best of them). Disinfect your cage/hutch; but basically, they simply do pop up, like with mites.

Yep, Lice 'n' Easy is the most popular.

Another type of shampoo called Fleaordie could also be tried.

In the US the first port of call when treating lice is a product called Advantage (active ingredients Imidacloprid), this is much like the spot-on treatments used commonly for mites in UK:

Some vets in UK do use such treatments, but bathing seems to undoubtedly be the preferred method here. No experience of Advantage myself (or should I say, of using it on my pigs) but it's widely used overseas.

Thanx all for your ideas and comments. Its a mystory as to where the things come from.

I shampood my piggy in the special insecticital shampoo (Johnsons -> for guinea pigs and rabbits). I`ll check tomorrow to see if its cleared up and keep you up to date.

Don't forget to clean the hutch at the same time as you clean the guineas - you can get an insecticidal hutch spray to use, to be doubly sure!

And don't forget to repeat the shampoo after a week or so, the first gets rid of the lice, the second gets rid of the eggs that have since hatched... or something like that! :))
