Hello everyone, please could I have some advice! Three of my four piggies (all of whom I rescued from a terrible breeder who kept her piggies on straw!) have little lice in the fur, which I can visibly see when I part the fur back. Can anyone recommend a treatment for this? They don't seem to be causing any problems, scratching or bald spots, but obviously it would be nice to be rid of them! Also does anyone know if the lice, mites and ringworm can be transferred to humans? Just out of curiosity! I don't think they have ingworm, I wouldn't know what to look for, but I would rather have prventative treatment for all my piggies!

Thanks

Hi Kat,

For the lice, www.gorgeousguineas.com sell a shampoo called Lice 'n' Easy, which works great for treating the problem. Instructions are included with the shampoo, but it's typically at least two baths, one week a part. Three baths if the infestation is particularly bad!

Mites and lice don't transfer to humans. Ringworm can infect other animals and humans, so - if ever you did have an animal diagnosed - you would need to treat the affected pig very carefully and disinfect the cage, wear gloves when handling etc.

thankyou, i have googled ringworm and have seen no signs of this in my guineas, thank goodness and touch wood. I will definitely order some shampoo. A friend told me you can get a spot on treatment called ivermectin. anyone used this?

Ivermectin is good for mites, tends not to be the most effective at dealing with lice though - best to wash those little monsters away!

thanks, i think ill invest in both. ive bben looking on vetmedic website and apparently ivermectin prevents ringworm too! and other internal infestationns, so it cant be a bad thing, right?

hum I'd be very suprised if ivermec prevents ringworm as this is transfered via spores in the air and ivermec just treats mites and lice, even with my pigs getting regular ivermec a couple still caught ringworm once when some rescues got it so i wouldnt believe that.

ringworm on humans (I did catch it via pigs!) starts by a ting red patch of dry skin, itchy then progreses into a circle from the inside out.

what is easily treated in both you and the guineas? and having re read the porduct, it prevents roundworms, which i presume are different to ring worms!
