Hi,

About 6 weeks ago I noticed our neutered boar began losing hair on his back & a sore bald spot quickly developed. The vet was unsure but thought it could have been 'walking lice' - she was able to see something on some pulled out fur under the microscope. We were given Ivermectin spot on (Xeno 450 I think) for both pigs and told to reapply 2 more doses at 2 week intervals. The boars hair grew back and all seemed fine however about 2 weeks after the last dose his symptoms have reappeared, he is scratching again, his hair is thinning and he has a lot of, what looks like, dandruff.
I'd be really grateful for any advice you can give.

Thanks!

Hi! I am sorry that you still have problems. Could you please post pictures? it looks like you are dealing with something else that has been subdued but not cured by the ivermectin if the symptoms are reappearing that quickly.

Thanks Wiebke.
I'm hoping these 2 photos are clear enough to show the dandruff. His hair is starting to come out in small clumps in places.
Thankfully he seems fine in himself though & our sow doesn't seem affected at all.

Hair coming out in clumps is usually rather a sign of a fungal infection than mites. Ivermectin will suppress, but not cure fungal issues. You may want to go back to your vet again. In all fairness, it is often not quite easy to tell a fungal skin infection and mange mites apart when they are not classic textbook; I have been there with piggies of mine.

I do not recommend to home treat on spec; you can do easily more harm than good! Your vet has prescribed the proper full course for mange mites, so he seems to be competent.

These links here may perhaps help you, so you know what to ask your vet:
