Lice? Mites? Please help!

We have 4 guinea pigs. They are only about 6 weeks old now. 2 males and 2 females. I noticed that one of the females looked like she had dandruff and was losing hair on her lower belly. After studying her under a good light I found that she is covered in little bugs. Cream-colored long skinny things crawling all over her dense fur on her back. Very tiny bugs but she appears to be covered in them. Upon inspecting the other three pigs I found them all to have varying amounts of them. They are new to our family and we've never had guinea pigs before. Can I treat them here at home or do I need to take them to a vet for prescribed medication? Should I be concerned about these affecting my children or our cat?

Thank you!

I think this is lice. There is no point in wasting money at the vets.Get a bottle of GG Lice and Easy shampoo.

This works well.Chrissie send her parcels out very quickly,I normally get mine within two days.

In the meantime you may be able to remove some of the lice with a nit comb.

Yep they sound like lice not mites as mites are under the skin and you cannot see them O0

I went to the gorgeousguineas website and it states that it may take up to 7 days for it to be delivered due to a postal strike. Will it be okay for the piggies to wait that long? I would hate for something to happen. Can I buy it elsewhere?

I dont think you can buy it anywhere else but I'm sure 7 days wont hurt but they strike may be over ;)

The postal strike is over. You should recieve your order within 2 days of ordering. You can (for a slightly higher payment) ask for next day delivery.Might be worth the few pence more for this in the circumstances.

Good luck with the shampoo O0 Going back to your question: I don't think humans would be in any peril from the lice but some humans can be allergic to them, and as for the cat I'd keep well away to be on the safe side. A lot of animal parasites are species specific although I have read that some cat fleas can live on other animals. Don't forget when treating the animals to treat their living environment too, and any permanent bedding you may use. Pets @ Home do a brilliant spray (I'm sure other places do too).
