HELP I don't know what to do.

I decided to give my piggies a really good brush today.

I have found that Paris (white) has lots of specs in her fur in various patches, I though at first it was dirt/poo but I tried to bruch out and it doesn't very easily, any ideas what this is?

Then whilst brushing Disney I noticed little wriggling brown things, very small and wriggling a bit, what are these?

I do not know what to do as I cannot get to a vets until Tuesday evening ..... are these lice and can they be treated with shampoo or do I need the vets?

I feel awful and itchy and I do not know where they could have got them from, I have had them for 7/8 weeks now, is it possible they already had them?

Very worried 8...

Don't worry, it is Lice by the sounds of it. Mites you cannot see and results in hair loss and scabby, flakey rump area.

Lice are wigglies in the skin, you can see them. Lice n Easy should sort them out from Gorgeous Guineas. :)

Can it wait that long? I would need to order some. Is this what the black bit ar in Paris fur? Didn't see any wrigglers on her but then her fur is so thick. OMG is worrying me to death.

Disney did have a few patches where the skin looked flaky but no hair loss and when I touched these she squeaked :(

Incidents of lice are on the increase - so are the incidents of poor quality hay!
Lice can be black, brown or white. Static lice don't appear to wriggle as "running lice" do, they cling to the hair shafts.

Thanks CCC4, trip to P@H tomorrow I hope, will get some shampoo and try and get rid of them, if not a trip to the vets I think!

Just feel like I should be doing something for them until I can get to the vets.

I've not tried the Beaphar for lice, but it did work for mites. A shampoo is best for lice, combined with a nit comb to remove the bugs. Applying conditioner (human brands or Gorgeous Guineas) after shampooing can also help, stops the lice hanging onto the hair.

I would definatley recommend peter gurney's idea of aromatherapy to get rid of lice/mites, it worked a treat with my two....
firstly shampoo them (i used gg lice n easy......but any shampoo organic or suitable for children would be ok). then rinsed and dried them off and applied the followin:
1 part lavendar oil, 1 part lemongrass oil and 8 parts almond oil. massge well into the skin. leave on for 7 days. shampoo as above again then do the aromatherapy massage again for 3 days and shampoo and wash off.
It worked a treat for my boys........it's natural and it makes them smell lovely!x)
good luck!

Thanks but I have a son with a nut allergy so the almond oil is a definate no no, otherwise I would have give it a go.

I have just ordered the lice n easy shampoo from gg. :):)

oh no sorry about that. Never mind, gg is pretty quick at sending orders through the post anyway.
I know what you mean about you iching too.... when my two had them i was absolutely paranoid!

Good luck hope you get it sorted soon

Well, I've ordered the Lice N Easy and I reckon it will be here Wednesday, but I have to work and my son also has hospital in the afternoon so I don't reckon the piggies will get a bath until Thursday.

I think in the meantime I am going to get some of this from P@H

I am really paranoid that they have mites though, and even dreamt about piggies and creepy crawlies!

Right, I've got the stuff from P@H (as per my previous reply), and I've ordered Lice N Easy from GG, I am now giving the hutch a massive clean and have some spray to do this with too.

On the instructions, it doesn't mention doing them again and says it effective for up to 4 weeks from the day of treatment, but can I shampoo them too in a week or so?

I have 4 pipettes, so enough for 2 goes on each piggie.

I have done it!

Disney weighed in at 700 grams so she had 1 pipette, Paris at 800 grams so she had 2 pipettes.

How does this Ivermectin work as I found it really difficult to massage onto the skin, is it absorbed?

Did you wear gloves whilst massaging the Ivomec into the pigs? If not then you should remain bug free for some time!!!
