Has anyone used this on their piggies before?

In the instructions it says 'If you have a boar, his grease gland will need attention before you start shampooing. swarfega works well, so take a couple of squirts and massae it into the grease gland for a minute or two'.

Now my questions are

what is swarfega?

where do i get it from?

did you use it?

and where are their sweat glands?

TIA

Hi
you can get swarfega from places like halfords, larger tescos etc and some pound shops do it. Mechanics often use it to remove grease from their hands. The grease gland is where a tail would be if they had one. If you feel that area, you should feel a hard sticky sort of patch if you havent cleaned it before.

It may take a while if there is a build up of grease. Just wet the area, massage some swarfega in and repeat a few times over a 10-15 minute period. It will come off gradually.

do sows have grease glands too? my girls never had this problem, but it'd be good to know

Hi Tia
We have used Lice and Easy and its great i noticed that a few of mine had static lice so used this and it was great.

what is swarfega? Swafega is something mostly used by Mechanics for getting grease and oil off hands. It works well on grease glands. I usually rub it in well then shampoo the normal way.

where do i get it from? Most shops such as Wilkinsons and B & M will have it and some hardware shops too. I steal mine out the garage from the other half lol

did you use it? Yes used it on Joe, Murphy and Jimmy

and where are their sweat glands? The Grease glands are where you would expect a tail to be if Guineas had one.

On this pic you will see a dark patch on Joes back end this is Joe before he had been Swarfegered!.

thanks everyone, ive emailed Chrissie because i wondered whether a normal shampoo will work as well to wash off the aloe melt i have for my sow and i have 2 shelties and it says its best to use conditioner. I'm hoping i dont need conditioner because otherwise ill have to wait for that to arrive not to mention another £7+ or so before i can treat my piggies :(

you dont have to use swarfega, you can use a numbe rof things, such as the shampoo etc but i would invest in some.

Lice and Easy is fantastic shampoo. I have Merinos, which are long curly haired pigs. I didnt use conditioner after their shampoo, it still left them really soft and silky

i have ordered some conditioner though today, to see what difference it makes as mine get matted backs really quickly! lets hope it works!

Dont worry bout the conditioner - you will be fine without it

Star - sows do have grease glands too. Boars usually secrete more but I have had a sow whose grease gland needed regular cleaning :)

thanks for asking that claire, because I think Iris my pig in the avatar has a mucky grease gland!

Crikey, I have never heard of grease glands. I have some GG lice and easy on hand just in case I need it, but do these glands need doing if they don't have lice? My boys don't seem to have greasy backsides, is this something that develops and why? (Also got some gg Original 4 Oil conditioning shampoo for when I start bathing my piggies) x

I don't think there is any connection between the grease gland and lice. In some piggies they are not noticeable. The main problem is in boars and they secrete excess grease but to be honest I'm completely sure why this is done. Here is a link which makes suggestions of what can be used to clean them

Rocky (female) has a grubby grease gland. She also has ovarian cyst and seems very confused hormonally. Is this connected with over active grease gland?

I have never had a problem with this in my sows. Only boars.

I don't have it now that my boars have been neutered ... they are very clean in that department. I suspect though that Junior will get it ultimately though.

It is sticky, greasy and sticks to their skin. I never tried swarfega but just a little diluted washing up liquid rubbed into the area before I bathed them. That might not be recommended, but it did the trick.

I haven't tried swarfega either but used vaseline, again some people wouldn't use that. I don't know if it connected with ovarian cysts sorry.

My boars get this and it seems to increase with age ie:my 4 year old gets a much stickier back end than my 6month old. I've never tried swarfega I always loosen with a little olive oil and then wash their back end
