Hi There, just looking for some advice / guidence on if i'm doing the right thing for my guinea pigs....... believe i have a lice problem as noticed small wriggly pale colored lice on my dark skinned guinea pig this morning. Recently my blonde buff guinea pig has been tugging at her hair and just randomly squeeking as if in a little pain alomost. Checked her over and couldnt find anything but did see 2 tiny scabs which i am thinkind is from her scratching. Anyway as all of this has come to light this morning i have just bathed them both in insecticidal shampoo i got from "Pets at Home". Do you think this enough or would you take them to the vets? Just trying to do "home-treatment" first i guess but if anyone thinks this is serious then please do let me know! Any advice appreciated - Thanks

Do they look like that? http://www.guinealynx.info/lice.html

Gorgeous guineas do a specially formulated shampoo for guinea pigs; many members have used it woth good success, especially as it is formulated for guinea pig skin ph and does not contain pesticides. It's called lice'n'easy.

Otherwise, topical ivermectin (sold as xeno450 for piggies over and xeno50 for piggies under 800g) can help as well. Please be careful to never bathe a piggy within 48 hours of topical treatment.

If the lice don't disappear or get worse, please see your vet.
