Hi guys, got a question. Kinda worried about three of my piggies. Last night we applied some lice treatment onto the back of their necks. I was worried I may have put too little on but this morning makes me think perhaps not.

Two of the girls (Gadget and Gimmick) are ok, be it a little quiet this morning. However, the other 3, are behaving odd. Terrified and fearful. Tuck and Liquorice running around periodically as if something is chasing them. Then they stop, shake, and scratch furiously, like their neck is hurting or irritating them. They are too scared to eat food, which is what is most concerning. Liquorice lives for food, more so than a normal pig, but she just wont come out the house, or calm down to eat, even cucumber!

Anyone else experienced this? I cannot remember the stuff we used, but I know it had a big thing on the packet saying 'toxic to cats' and it was grey and purple I beleive. And I think it had a 'v' and 'x' in... Might be wrong though.

Just phoned the vets and they weren't very helpful. Just telling me stuff I already know about them not eating being a worrying sign, and asking me to bring them in. Which I am reluctant to do until I know these signs aren't just their behaviour. (The two who are ok, and the most dominant and confident, the three who are distressed have issues with being touched most days). Its also that they do want to eat, are just to scared to. Its not their appitite thats gone. Just their confidence.

I feel like I am overreacting!

Was it ivermectin?

Have you checked the skin where you put it on? If it is toxic to cats, surely piggys dont stand a chance....? I would take them all to the vets to be checked.

Good luck x

Nar its specifically for Guineas, I made sure I checked that :). I couldn't see any irritation but I will be checking as soon as I get in.

They could just be really scared....keep an eye on them..x
cant put anything on my yorkies neck she goes mental. As for Bertie I hope he never gets anything. You should see him when I give him a quick wash!:...

Yeah :(. They are the more person shy of the 5. Unfortunatly I had tried shampoos and even though they work for a few months, but with there being 5 living together the lice just seems to keep reoccuring so this is the next step up.

This was all due to my lack of knowledge of good rescueing practice when we helped a piggie last year, I put her in with my girls without isolating her first, then boom, a few months later, big lice problem. She is the worse for bug numbers, but oddly the least scratchy of the lot, so I never saw the signs >.<.

Lesson learn't, just wish it was me who was effected by it and not them. Its even worse when my actions (or inactions) are causing this level of fear and upset :(. I guess it takes stuff like this for you to never do it again.

Sounds like the ivermectin is irritating there skin a bit. Keep a close eye on them. If you gave them xeno 50 and they are adult piggies then its not enough ivermectin, they need the xeno 450. If they do have mites the xeno 50 may have partly killed some lice/mites, making the rest agitated and therefore making the piggies more ichy? Not sure what else to suggest.

x.
