I was hoping my first post about these guys would be one introducing them, but i shall have to do that later.

i have literally tonight just taken on two 18 month old piggies(males) that are absolutely gorgeous, but are also riddled with what I'm sure are lice. Bill and Budd never had lice so i dont know what they look like on piggies. ive had rats with lice before and they were always red thin fast moving things. well what I'm seeing on these boys are fast moving and long and thin but they are almost white-are they still lice?

I'm going to try and get them into the vets in the morning so they can be treated straight away but wondered what the right treatment is-would it be panamec? (again this is what i treat the rats with)

i will also be ordering some lice and easy shampoo from gorgeous guineas now to help.

i promise i will do a proper thread about where they came from and who they are(with piccies of course!) tomorrow ;D they are so so cute and I'm so excited to have piggies in my life again! ;D

ok, i really should look further in this section before posting :embarassed: sorry! seems they are indeed lice and ivermec/panamec is the right course of treatment so off to the vets for the little lads tomorrow!

i will still get some lice n easy shampoo though but does anyone know how long after giving the panamec can i bath them? would it be best to wait a day or two so its properly absorbed into the skin?

The lice and easy should kill them straight off without any need for any other treatment.

Remember I'm only 5 mins away if you ever need a hand with them or if you want me to check them over for you.

You should always wait for at least 24 hours before using any shampoo following a dose of Ivermectin.,because of the danger of chemical interreaction.

Chrissie recommends a minimum of 48 hours on her website.

Panamec/Ivermectin will not treat lice, they are not blood suckers.

Lice n Easy is def the way to go, but they need to be done twice, or you'll have done it in vain :) If you have just got them, id ivo them to be on the safe side :) you dont want mites :(

Bearing that in mind :)

thankyou for all the replies everyone. i never thought that they might have mites aswell as lice so yes il definately get them seen for some panamec tomorrow then. i have just ordered some lice n easy-anyone have any idea when it might get here? its been a while since i ordered off gorgeous guineas so i cant remember. also ordered some lovely lavender shampoo and conditioner as one of the boys is a rex :)

Kate i will drop you a message tomorrow when I'm back on to post piccies of the boys :)

just gave them some spring greens and they were a bit shy about eating it straight away-went back in ten minutes later and there wasnt a bit of spring greens in sight! :o hehe

Gorgeous Guineas post out very quickly :)

oh thats good to hear, thanks!

i have got an appointment for the boys for 11 this morning. just wondering if guinea pigs are ok to be injected with ivermec? i dont want the vet to go injecting it if they are not supposed to!

very quick delivery, my shampoo arrived the day after i ordered it.

Injectible ivermectin works for mites but not lice. Because the ivermectin goes right into the bloodstream and lice don't suck blood then it doesn't affect them.

It needs to be applied topically.

Just back from the vets and never going there again >:( we saw a complete idiot of a locum who completely spoke down to me and didnt know what on earth he was going on about. he also insisted on injecting the ivermec(seemed a little too needle happy for my liking) i told him they have lice, of course he didnt like me making the diagnosis so instead told me they were mites. i said "i though you couldnt see mites?" he replied "you can see some" since when exactly? it is my understanding that ALL mites cant be seen with the naked eye. it is pretty obvious these pair have lice.

he wasnt even going to check them over and he didnt even look through their fur properly( infact all he done was look at the tuft on ONE of the boys heads). AND he didnt even weigh them before injecting them!

he also refused to let me have any ivermec to put on the back of the neck and told me it would be neglagent(sp?) to do so and that they need to go back every week for three weeks. so that means that every other vet that has ever gave me panamec to treat my lot at home has been irrisponsible and neglagent? I'm just fuming and needed to get all this off my chest.

good news is the lice n easy should be here early next week(would have been earlier if it wasnt for the stupid postal strike) so il get them bathed with that and wont bother bringing them back for any more injections. the poor things were terrified.

i shall definately be searching for a new vets for them!

what a complete d__k of a vet, I hate people who work with the public, and can't be polite. they make me seethe, I had a git of a bus driver last week who was really rude to me, i pressed the bell 3 times and he wasn't going to stop. so i got up and told him that i had pressed the bell, he wasn't impressed and was rather rude, i really should of said f off you miserable tw_t.

theres just no need for it.

calm down, and chill, i'd find another vet too. or just make sure you don't see him again.

I have oral ivomec if you need it but if the problem is just lice then the shampoo will do the job brilliantly.

Timmy had running lice when I got him, 2 shampoos with lice n easy from gg, a week apart saw them off and I havent had a problem since. Sorry the vet you saw was a d**k, try and source a more competant one near you.
