I have had my two little loves for about 3 months now. After I had had them for about 4 weeks we noticed that they did indeed have lice. It wasnt much of an issue and we treated them both with advantage as soon as possible. So since then, the scratching as majorly decreased and I hadn't noticed any movement in their fur or any nits (but they still don't enjoy being handled much so I wasn't getting a good look everyday). But.....looks like they're back! A few days ago I looked at Pippin and it was clear that she had lice again. I am fairly certain I would have noticed if they had had it that long so I feel like they must of come in on some hay or something.

So once again I was giving them both advantage behind their ears. I hear that it is supposed to kill adult lice within a day or so yet 1 week down the road, the lice is still there! It is definitely more of a problem on Pippin and I know that she moved when my dad was putting the advantage on so it got more on her ear than her actual body...would that affect how well it works? Is it definitely not safe to give them any more before 30 days? I just hate to make them stay miserable or for it to get any worse! What would you suggest? I really just want to kick this in the butt and let my piggies be happy and lice free as soon as possible!

Hi! It would be best to see a vet. Lice can be very persistent. He may be able to give you follow up treatment or a stronger product. Most shop products are too low dosed to be of use for the actual treatment; they are generally more geared for the prevention of skin parasites. Do not be tempted to rush any treatment against the advice on the bought product.

With members from all over the world, it helps us a lot if you please added your country, state or (for the UK) your county/city to your details so we can always give you the best advice for your location straight away. As you can imagine, medication and product names differ, as does access to piggy savvy vets etc. Click on your username on the top bar, then go personal details and scroll down to location. Thanks!

So sorry about the location:) I believe I got it fixed (I'm from Ohio). Anyways thanks for the reply! From what I have read, most people use advantage which is for cats but you use a certain dosage for the weight of your guinea pig. Is there something stronger than this? I do have some money saved up for a vet visit but would rather wait to use that if there is a way to do this myself.

In the US, advantage is about the only product recommended for the treatment of lice.

You could try lice'n'easy shampoo (which is specifically made for guinea pigs) additionally; it is British based but can be shipped to other countries. I would however contact the lady who makes it whether it is compatible with advantage/imidacloprid before you buy. Some members have had good experiences with that.

I've heard about that as well...but I really don't know that they would tolerate a bath at this point. I can hold Sage but its a struggle and Pippin will only tolerate being held in a cozy cup. But if that's my last chance I guess I'll have to try it! The other thing I hear is that the lice will run to their eye area where you can't put the shampoo. do you know what you can do about that?

I would discuss it with the lady who runs gorgeous guineas; she is very experienced with all things skin.
