Hey guys! I currently have 4 guinea pigs 2 males and 2 females. Both males and females are kept in same sex enclosures away from one another to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

I was grooming my 2 boys and noticed they had lice. They've never had lice before but luckily I ordered some Ivermectin (I think that's how its spelt) and it came on the same day I discovered the lice. I've weighed everyone and worked out each individuals dosage. After doing a thorough check on the girls they have no lice but to make sure I have treated them and will treat them for 3 weeks. Everyone's enclosure has had a good clean, as well as any toys/hides/beds have been disinfected.

Heres my question... Does anyone have any ideas to where the lice has come from? They haven't been into contact or introduced to any other guinea pigs other than their cage mates. I've heard they could've come from the bedding/substrate but I don't think that is the culprit. I have a friend who owns rats and other animals and doesn't treat his animals for parasites and I have seen fleas on his animals before. Is it possible I introduced them into my homes after been in contact with his animals?

Also if there is any tips on how to prevent this happening in the future and how to control the current situation please go ahead :)

Hello

Welcome to the forum.

What type of lice are they, have you had this diagnosed and prescribed by a vet?

Hi, ivomectin is mainly used for mites (which burrow in the skin) and may not be effective against lice. You may need to bathe them in an appropriate guinea pig safe shampoo. Sometimes lice can come from hay. Your vet should be able to tell you what type of lice they are and how best to treat them
