The girls are still a bit quiet after the loss of their husboar, but as soon as the waiting period is over they will be getting a new husboar in the next few weeks. I have told them but they seem unimpressed :)) and I am worrying about the new introductions again, although having done this once before I am not as worried about going through this again. I know how much better the group were as a 4 some, and I feel so sad for fudge who is once again for the moment the lonesome pig of the group - mind you she isnt as pushed out as she was last year because she is now a grown up piggie and is quite capable of standing up for herself against crystal who bosses her around all the time.

But the girls have been keeping me busy, they demand grass daily, I have a lawn overflowing with it and trimming patches daily for them is helping me keep it down (just), and unfortunately crystal has yet another reaction to lice mallethead which I treated with just the gorgeous guineas lice and easy shampoo, I took a risk two weeks ago to not use the spot on because it makes crystals skin much worse for 48 hours and have the spot on as a back up treatment if the shampoo failed, but it did the trick. Bad slave that I was, I thought the new bag of hay was safe and I was wrong 8... it was actually the cause (as I am never sure which bag it came from, it always happens just as I start a new bag, its been the old one previously). So thrown that out and dosed with louse powder I am watching the girls to see if I can still hold off using the last resort spot on. I may shampoo them again if crystal still shows signs of irritation.

I know its a risk, its a calculated risk due to the adverse reaction crystal has to the spot on treatment. The other two do not react to the treatment or the lice, if all of them were fine I would peridocally spot on as prevention but because crystal reacts so badly I have to go down a different route for her sake, at least give it a try to see if a bit of hard work - ie shampooing once a fortnight works as well as the one treatment of spot on, but without the reaction. If I had not of been wrong about which bag of hay I would have seen hair regrowth on her bald spot on her bum, but she has aggrivated the same patch again yesterday so back to aloe vera twice a day, if she still is bad tomorrow I will shampoo, if no better the following day I will ivormec her and the others (obviously will shampoo the others too).

Poor love :( I do feel for her when she reacts, but a bit of tlc and her fur comes back right as rain. Just funny how she has such a bad reaction to lice, its like flea allergies in cats and dogs.
 
Is it static lice?

If so, ivermectin spot on treatments won't help as the static lice aren't blood feeders.
 
Not sure, its lice I see in their hair, the only source is hay - which cant always be avoided, and the two times before the ivormec has done the job (and have used it for years on the farm for all sorts of parasite related issues).

The shampoo worked, I just stupidly reinfested them malletheadmallethead

ETA - anyone wondering why I call it ivormec, old farming habit

Do the lice move? If they're black/brown flecks that don't wriggle, they're static lice, which usually come from hay.

If they're like wriggley dandruffy whitey things, they're wriggley lice that ive forgotten the name of and they do bite and feed from the blood.

Edit: I think Panomec is the drug of choice these days :))
 
think static, the same ones I have seen on cattle which came from their hay too - still have the image of that poor calf that was covered in them all over her head :)>>> put powder on the lot of them over three days and got rid of the little blighters. I had them all over my t-shirt after grabbing the calf to treat :)>>> Thats why I recognise them so well, also the two goats I foot trim had them in their fur the last time I saw them (feb), again that was from their hay.

I hope that you can clear up you lice problem and weather the girls until the new man is ready to be introduced!

I found the interim period between Llewelyn and Hywel difficult. Ffowlyn went absolutely bonkers without a boar.
 
just put them out to play in the really long grass (the runs been down in that site since the last time we had sunshine in march) for a couple of hours, gives them something to do. All three were munching their own tunnels through :)) and had a nice look at crystal, its not as bad as I thought yesterday, tufts regrowing already and her skin is not irritated so looks like they wont need a bath for a few weeks yet.
