I know this has probably been asked a million times and does not have one straight forward answer but I have a 5 year old boy calles Charlie, I love him to bits and was wondering how much more time he has left, other than being a little underweight he is perfectly healthy

I think the age range is anything between 5-8 years generally speaking, although there have been reports of 10 year old piggies!

As long as you are monitoring his health, his weight and other factors and he's healthy, hopefully he will live a while longer. There is no hard and fast rules to guinea ages - but I hope Charlie lives for a long while yet :)

It is a scary thought when you realise how old they are. I just realised that all of my 7 chinchillas are now in their 8th & 9th years. I mean, I know how old they are, but it just hit me the other day that even the youngest is no spring chicken anymore. Chinchillas can live for 15-20 years but the oldest I've had was 10.

My oldest guinea pig was about 7, but that was 25 years ago.

Hopefully your Charlie will be happy and healthy for a while yet. :)

I know that feeling too well Margaret, my chinny Daisy is about 10 years old now and shes as fit as a fiddle but i worry about her especially as i lost her husband Ralph to tooth problems 2 years ago (they was rescues and he was probably from a well known pet chain store), i keep a close eye on her.

My oldest guinea pig was 9 years old when he died, its like humans some live longer then others :)

Sadly I have lost too many to malocclusion and teeth problems over the years. Unfortunately many chinnies don't make it past 2 or 3 years old because of this. This is one reason why I gave up my rescue work with chinnies as it was soul destroying to have to deal with time and again. I hope that mine, having got this far without teeth problems, will not develop them as they age, but there's no guarantee.

What we put ourselves through, eh?! :))

I've been lucky with the degus, never had a tooth problem but i expect with poor breeding to see this increase. Its awful to see them suffer :(

My two rescue girls, Caramel and Moomin must have been around 8 years old when they went to the Bridge. I had them 2 years, the little girl who had them before me, had them for 5 years, and they were adults when she got them. It is just luck I think. I miss Moomin and Caramel so much, they were so tame. They were real characters.

The answer to guinea pig life expectancy depends on numerous factors, and is not an easy one to figure out. Average life span is from 4 - 8 years, but these numbers are just statistics. In fact, according to the 2006 Guinness Book of Records, the longest living guinea pig survived more than 14 years :)
