Good Morning,
I've got back from holiday and my family have told me about a scab they found on one out of five piggies. Been there last few days, scabs seems to have fallen off and more of a bald patch showing.

On my piggie inspection, I'm thinking fungal infection, maybe ringworm or mite? It's about a 20p size bald area, dry with small knobbly scabs over the area. It's not quite the obvious head location, it's low down on the neck.

This piggie is lowest in the pecking order and I'd prefer not to isolate and treat all piggies in case. I'll be taking them home soon, so I'll disinfect everything. My family have brought some dust extracted bedding as they'd run out, not what I'd use but only temporary, i wonder if she's picked up mites that way and maybe a little stress added in too?

What do you guys think it is? I'll be in contact with the vets to sort treatment regardless, but given a lot of you see similar posts or have experience here, i value your views!

Thank you

It does look like it could be fungal, but the vet is the best person to give a proper diagnosis and treatment.
Depending on the type of fungal not all piggies may need treatment.

I had a case where one piggy got it and was treated with a topical cream, but because it wasn't too bad (and wasn't ringworm) the others were all fine.
Good luck at the vet and let us know how you get on.

No obvious mites seen on the microscope, but Xeno trestment started on all pigs. I've noticed another pig has developed a bald patch on the neck with a few tiny reddish scabs on the outer edge of the patch. The original pigs bald patch seems to be shrinking and the fur is growing back. And now a third pig has developed a slight scabby ear on the very edge?!

I'm wondering whether to finish the course of two more mite treatments or look into intrafungal, i don't know if that can be started if I've given one dose of xeno a week ago or should i be patient and wait for the mite treatment.

I plan on deep cleaning the cage too!

I would follow your vet's instructions.
Were any of them tested for fungal/ringowrm?

I had the exact same scenario with one of my pigs, and the vet suggested starting with Xeno (despite not seeing mites under the microscope) but at the same time she also took a skin scrape to culture and rule out ringworm.
