Molly seemed to really like Lily and they cuddled in the hide house when we first put her in the cage with Molly.

All was wella nd I wen to bed and was woke up by screeching-only word to describe it-came out to check piggies and Molly had Lily down and was literally chewing on her.

Got them separated and Lilly was red with blood. Called our vet and ran her straight up. Vet is keeping her over night and taking care of her wounds.

We will go into the city tomorrow and get another cage and they will be kept separated. We are keeping all three pigs but so much for having a herd together.

oh no! I really hope that Lilly is ok and recovering well. Thank god you had somewhere you could take her quickly. Naughty Molly, I wonder what triggered that

Aww poor Lily the same as Lady Kelly what on earth caused that. Especially as I think sows are more gentle. Hope someone's got an answer on the forum.

Were they bonded in neutral territory before being put into the cage together?

I hope that Lily is recovering well!

Have you only had one hidey with only exit in the cage? Did you bond on neutral ground beforehand and make sure that they had settled down well together before moving them into a joint, re-done-up cage without any places one of them could be cornered in during the dominance phase, like we recommend in our guides which we have given you) in order to prevent these kinds of accidents from a happening when one piggy is feeling cornered with no escape route?

Sadly, it is very unlikely now that they will go together again. :(

Yes we didi all of the above and had several hides with several openings in each.

Yes we didi all of this and our vet came and helped us introduce them. Lily has been with us a week and has been in a cage in the pen with Molly so Molly could not hurt her.
Vet said some pigs are very territorial and Molly is.

Oh no that must have been a awful sight to wake up to. I hope Lily will be ok.

Not a fan of alfalfa myself but great news that she's eating it so at least her ordeal hasn't affected her appetite. My piggies love alfalfa occasionally too.

I am very sorry - such an overreaction is very rare, especially if they have been together peacefully for several days. It must have been a real shock for you? Have they been full on bites or just bad scratches? :(

Some piggies, especially those that have been kept on their own from a very young age or cranky older sows can struggle with accepting a companion, but it generally shows during bonding and the early dominance phase.
