My 4 year old guinea bashed her back left leg against the front of her hutch yesterday and now she is limping and won't put any weight on it. She doesn't appear to be in any pain and is still eating normally, but just holds it slightly off the ground and hops around using her other legs! She gets very stressed at the vets so i'm going to wait a few days to see if it improves before i consider taking her in. I would love to hear of any advice anyone has or if anyone else has a similar problem with their piggie as i'm very worried about her! :(

Thanks!

Your girl IS putting weight on her leg when she is walking?

She will be in pain and it would be good if you could give her metacam (from the vets; it's also an anti-inflammatory) or children's nurofen 0.2 ml from the pharmacy.

My Nerys is currently limping badly as well from a major strain; she's on metacam. She is also putting as little weight on her front leg as possible.

She's been hopping around and has now started to lower her leg so it now touches the ground, but still refuses to put weight on it. She has let me touch her foot, leg and the area around the leg, but think i will still get her some childrens nurofen incase. Thanks for the advice, think i'll take her to the vets if she's still limping in a couple days.

Thankyou!

Welcome to the forum, Amy, sorry to hear your guinea has hurt her leg.

I agree that children's Nurofen may help provided guinea is otherwise well, dosage is 0.2ml 2x daily for as long as it's needed. I have done just the same for any of mine that have strained or sprained a leg. In this case, I would just dose until your sow is able to use her leg.

If she lets you touch the leg without any particular signs of pain, it is perhaps more likely to be a sprain rather than anything more serious, but as ever, if there is no improvement within a few days, it's worth seeing the vet. :)
