I do apologise for all the questions i just want to learn and look after my piggie in the best way possible !

I have read that alot of you are anti wood shavings for bedding and i agree and use care fresh, however what about for lining the cage with ? Is it ok to use Saw dust shaving from the pet shop ?

Many thanks and sorry again

Ask as many questions as you like, that is the reason for this board.,and good on you for wanting to learn.

Wood shavings as be4dding are controversial because a lot of people think(including myself) that the oils in the wood can cause health problems.Having said this,I do know owners who use good quality shavings with no apparent problem. They do put thick hay on top though.Sawdust is a no no,because it can irritate the piggies eyes and respitory tract.I just use newspaper with thick hay on top.If I have a poorly or frail elderly piggy I use newspaper with a vet bed,and a thin layer of hay.

thanks mary :) i did mean the shavings not the dust( can you even buy the actual dust ?)

What about using the wood shaving just as a lining in the cage not as bedding ?

THanks again :)

Yes,you could line the cage with shavings but I would still recommend putting at least a thin layer of hay on top. Yes,you can buy sawdust in pet shops.

Mary

ok ill try that :) i didn't know you could by the actual dust, how strange !

Thanks mary :)

You could use woodshavings then a layer of newspaper then hay. Have you tried megazorb? this stuff is great I have tried everything and then when I joined here people were raving about it and now I know why ;)

oooo megazorb, what's that and where can you get it (i'm the one asking questions now! ::) ) :D

I get mine from a farm shop so do others here where are you from? There are a few pwople on here who use it they may be able to recomend some where. I pay 6ish quid for a huge sack lasts a while with 8 piggies you can get it on the net not sure where tho?

Yes, it is possible to buy sawdust!

When I was new to piggies, I used shavings, but always good quality with dust extracted. I kept boars at the time and did find that the chips tended to stick to some pigs' bottoms. I also had a couple of pigs who developed respiratory problems. I switched to using Megazorb - it's made as horse bedding, but the pigs are just great on it. All the urine is soaked up, the wet patches can be easily lifted out and replaced each day and it can go in the recycling bin cos it's compostable. I buy it from my local equestrian shop - it costs me about £5 a week to keep my (large) run clean. Stockists can be found here:

http://www.northerncropdriers.co.uk/stockists.htm

As I now keep sows (two of which have very long coats which get very wet and matted on hay) I don't put hay on top - I just make sure they have plenty of hay in their hay racks at all times.

Since the switch to Megazorb, I have had no further respiratory probs in my pigs. It may be coincidence, but I would guess it's not.

I live just outside the birmingham area :)

Is it possible to buy megazorb online ?

I've never found it online, but I would imagine delivery charges would be high! Try your local equestrian shops. The link I gave you seems quite out of date becasue I know of one outlet where I can buy it that isnt listed there.

You can get Megazorb from any horse feed suppliers.

I am in Birmingham too and the nearest one to me is a place called 'The Hungry Horse' in Solihul.

If you look on yellow pages you should be able to search for one near to you.

What exactly is Megazorb... I'm a carefresh user but I am using 3 bags a week and Pets@home won't have 3 for 2 forever!

I have heard it's quite smelly does anyone use it indoors?

megazorb is like tiny bits of carefresh it can be a bit smelly but that soon goes when its out of the bag It is very absorbant and way cheaper than carefresh I think Viki uses it in her room ( in the cage obviously) and I use it for my hamster.

We use it indoors for our hamster and the smell goes after the first few hours.

We use newspaper, then carefresh, then hay, but we get through a bag of carefresh each week so I will look for horse supply shops nearby and see if they have megazorb.

If its the same as my suppliers you shouldnt have to pay more than 6-10 quid (I pay 6ish quid) you get a huge sack full. :)

In the Birmingham area you can get Megazorb from the Hungary Horse in Sutton Coldfield and there is a farm suppiier on Barr Beacon that sells it.
