Anyone had any luck getting a piggy to use a litter box? I use paper bedding and it gets very expensive as I clean it out constantly! I know the benefits of fleece bedding but I can't get past just looking at all the poop. I've heard they can use a litter box or specific area. Anyone have success with this?

All I know is that my 2 cheeky boas are now so used to having a hay box each that they do use it like a loo predominantly because their beloved hay is in there of course!

What I do is use 2 old IKEA shallow plastic storage boxes with first a layer of newspaper, then a fragrant sprinkling of wood shavings followed lastly by a luxurious covering of finest hay. They love it and I know they use these 2 areas the most as the newspaper that covers the base of their enclosure underneath the fleece, is hardly ever stained.

They're not trained, they just want the hay and dive in and out whenever they are inside- so it works as it saves me the effort of doing anything much outside this area. So really as long as you provide hay or limit it to a specific area they will almost certainly pee there. There's no way you can confine the poop though! That's asking too much😆

Thank you! Very good info. What kind of wood shavings do you use?

I see you're in the US, so I don't know what you can get, but I think it's fairly standard - not dusty, fine sawdust, but the next grade up , not too coarse- the brands we can get in the UK are eg Snowflake, Animal Dreams, Pure Pastures. You'll see what I mean if you Google those. Hope that helps😊

Guinea pigs can’t be trained. They generally go where they eat and drink. But they will go everywhere. That’s just the way they are 😉

Thwy will pop and pee anywhere. Hot spots where they eat. I use rewashable puppy pads.

As others have said they can't be litter trained.
I have found that by providing large shallow trays filled with hay that you can 'catch' a large percentage of their pee and poop, but this is simply because they spend a lot of time in there eating.

Does anyone have any suggestions, my 2 boy brother 5 month old pigs only poo in the litter box and tend to mostly pee there too, but recently they started peeing a lot in a spot in the middle or the enclosure as well. How could i redirect them to start use the litter box more.

The short answer is, you can't. I use fleece pee pads in "those" areas in the cage, which get changed every day or two. My boys are free roaming but apart from the occasional (very rare) accident, when they are out they only pee and poop in the hay tray or their carrier. When they were younger I had pads out round the room and put the tray and carrier where they were going to potty and stopped putting pads in the other places.

You can't litter train guinea pigs. Some may have favourite spots but they can change over time. They do tend to wee and poop more in the places they eat but not always, hay trays or hay piles being more common. I have one piggy who has a favourite corner so I put a pee pad there so I can pick it up and shake the poop off a couple of times a day but he does still go in his bed and hay.

I can only agree with the others, piggies can’t be litter trained. Any usage of a litter tray is incidental.
