tahnks

I've heard that it is actually quite hard to train them to use a potty, but I guess that different people will use different techniques and it might not work for some, but it might for others. They are used to peeing and pooing anywhere really in the wild so it is there instinct to do the same nowadays as pets. Perhaps somebody a little more experienced would be able to suggest something as I know that I had little success trying it with my two, they just didn't take any notice so I gave up in the end!

You can't fully litter train them from what i've heard.

Basically if a piggy is at one end of it's cage it won't run all the way to the other side just to go to the toilet, there not that sort of animal thats so easily trained but you can partially do it, as i have as two of my piggies poop and pee more in one side that another but they still poop elsewhere !

oh okay whilst doing some reasearch it says its very simple and all you do is sprinkel some of there poo on it and encourage them, but i dont know if theres any truth behind it ..... my friends rabbit is trained but i dont know if you train them the same as pigs

It is pretty simple but only if your piggy is the sort of habbit who decides on where to poop, i'd never even try with my other 3 piggies, but my fosters pee in one corner so it was a case of putting a tray with paper based litter in and mixing with some sawdust so i could change that out more often etc.

Litter training piggies isn't really necessary though as with rabbits they can be house rabbits etc. but with piggies you'd still need to clean out the cage just as often to keep general hygine.

My hamster is potty trained (I know piggies and hamsters are completely different..) and I just wanted to see if she would use the litter and she did, immediately. I scooped some of her poops in there to get the smell into the litter and she began using it. I guess you could try it, but I'm not entirely sure if it would work the same with pigs and even still, you would get some poops and pees around the cage!

i would clean the out often it just fustartes me how after i have cleaned them out the next day its covered in poo rolleyes ( i know that its in there nature but i have a rather large hutch)

It is almost impossible to toilet train guinea pigs. They will poop everywhere as they do not see it as something 'dirty'. I do three poop collections a day so this is just something that comes with having guinea pigs.

i have decided to not bother to train them since it seems its not possibel....oh and i use sawdust ( they have a outdoor hutch and run attached but come inside a lot for )

Hi,

There was a thread about this some time about a month ago and I got a few ideas from that which seem to have worked with mine.

It wasn't so much a matter of litter training as everyone says above, this doesn't seem to really work with gps. But when I switched to fleece, I put a low ridge cat litter tray in with carefresh (or whatever you want to use) and put all their hay and food bowls in it and this seems to catch most of their poops! Now I only have a few very few poops on the fleece (< 10 a day?) and I clean out the litter tray every day as the vast majority are in there (quite easy).

How about a hay box? and food tray?

I bought this cat litter tray from P@H, my girls always had their cage door open with access to a run, but as they were on carpet and i'd use towels and didn't want to put hay straight ontop of this just looked messy and it would stick to the carpet: the hay tray ensured that the hay stayed in the tray because of the lipped rim and the girls would mostly do their poos and pee in there, making it easy to clean out. Hardly no poos on the towel at all, just in their cosies.

How about putting water bowls/food bowls on a tray like this:

Use something absorbent on the tray so if there is any spills or pee, it will absorb it, then you can just clear the tray when it looks messy. Hopefully it will reduce the mess rolleyes

Yes that's the same sort of P@H cat litter tray I got, my 6 month old piggies have no problem hopping in and out of it and it's saved me a bit of time cleaning, so more cuddles :)

It's nearly impossible to train them, as others have said give them a tray with newspaper & hay in, they will do most of their pee/poop in there.

Of my three, one is determined to poop everywhere lol!

Daisy (my pic) is however very clean, in fact when I take the paper out of their tray in the morning she has been known to stand & wait whilst I change the tray then pee in it as soon as I replace it with clean paper rolleyes it really is amazing to watch & I have never seen her pee on the fleece. The other one is starting to do it more in the tray as well, but Chubs (Mummy pig) is determined to avoid any sort of organised peeing lol :)

I bought the corner litter trays to see if that cut down the amount of poops in the cage but they still just went wherever they sat :))
I now use them as hay trays and they love sitting in them and of course pooping......:))
