I recently purchased a litter box and the suggested litter training pellets for the box, and did as the instructions said for setting it up. My guinea pigs came over to it, sniffed it, chewed on it, and left it alone. I picked up some of their poop that was in the cage and put it in the box hoping they would get the hint but nothing. I really want to litter train them and if this isn't the right way, please let me know. Any advice?

Guinea pigs are very difficult to litter train and generally I tend to find either they get it or they don’t. Guinea pigs aren’t like rabbits in the sense that they have a designated toilet spot. Most pigs will tend to favour one area of the cage but it’s normally under hay racks or hideys because it’s convenient and there’s no need to move. Out of my three girls, only the one will go out of her way to pee and poop in either one of two “designated toilet corners”.

I tend to find litter trays work best when placed under hay racks as this is where pigs spend most of their time and do most of their toileting. I also clean out the bedding under their hides daily as again this is a favour toileting spot. Cleaning these two parts of the cage daily tends to keep the cage clean enough that I only have to do one big clean every 5 days.

I use 32 litre under bed storage boxes with hemp bedding and hay. They do most of their wees in them and a few on the cage liner under their beds.

I so a poo patrol every day (shake out the liner under thire beds) and clean the trays every few days.

The cage liner is cleaned once a week or more if they wee on it a lot.

In one cage I have a litter tray lined with newspaper under the hay rack, and another tray lined with newspaper and filled with hay. They do most of their wees in either of these places. Poops everywhere. I poop pick every morning and full clean twice a week. In the other cage I just have the lined tray of hay (they don't have a hay rack), but those guys just wee anywhere. I have the second cage lined with a thick bed protector covered in fleece, which doesn't seem to smell much.

I have never suceeded in training her but she will go to the bathroom when she sees I am about to pick her up. Also she rarely goes poop out side of her cage unless I have her out a long time.
