We have three female guinea pigs between four and six months. They do seem to go mostly in their hay boxes I would say maybe in the morning there’s 10 poops that are not in there and maybe 12 by the time school ends.
We had been cleaning the litter box out every four days for the last week or so, but it was super dirty last time so I’m thinking I need to do it in smaller increments. Would every three days work? Or do we think we have to do it every other day? It is a pretty big hay box and they do have a second one that they use.

Hi. I have four mats that I change every 2 days. I have two boys. Two of the mats are under their hay piles and two are under their hides. They poop all over lol.

Give it a try and see how it works for you.
I have two single boars (they fought and fell out so now live side by side). They each have a hay area the size of a 2x1 and I remove wet hay and bedding every day

My two girls live in a 160 x 80cm cage and half has hay and news papers (including two litter trays) and half has fleece. I keep the hay half covered over with a fleece to help them to feel secure.

I change the litter trays and the fleece mats every few days. They have a wooden magazine rack in the hay area to ensure that they have some clean hay to eat every day!
