Hi everyone - your experience needed please! -

Can anyone tell me if the litter trays that are sold as suitable for guinea pigs actually work? Can the GPs be trained to use them and if so how?!

We've had our 6 week old piglets for a couple of weeks and they poo so much! The spot cleaning I've read that needs to be done daily is becoming nearly a full on clean out every evening and the amount of woodshavings that we're getting through is becoming rather expensive!

What does everyone else do?

Thanks x

Hi! I'm glad you asked -'cause I know the answer. :(|):)) I personally have not tried litter trays, but I have heard stories. For some piggies, it works and for others, it doesn't. To help them learn, you can put some bedding+some poos in the litter tray. Then put a hay rack above it, because most piggies do their pooping where they eat. Also, most people use fleece (100% Polyester) that way it is reusable, washable (no softener), and pretty! :)

Hope your piggies learn to use the litter tray! xx

Thanks for your quick reply!

I have been thinking about fleece but I'm a bit confused - how often would you wash it/change it? Do you just lie it accross the bottom of the cage then put hay on top?

Sorry if sounding a bit thick - I'm new to all this!

If you use fleece, you have it best in a tray whose edges are at least 4 inches high, or you will have an anwful mess everywhere, as the hay will stick to the fleece. You will need to shake out the fleece thoru=oughly before washing anyway, and pick out any hay that sticks to it.

How often you wash fleece depends on the underlay and the number of piggies that use it. I change every three days, others once weekly.

Hi - my two use their litter tray, I put it into the corner that they weed the most, lined it with newspaper and a sprinkle of soft bedding (p@h safe bedding) and they used it from day one. They are on fleece so this is kept nice and clean changed every 2/3 days. When they are in their indoor run, I use a cat litter tray, again lined with newspaper and full of hay and a hay rack above so they also get fresh hay, keeping the fleece dry and also hay doesn't get everywhere.
