I use megazorb and hay in mine. I don't know about cat litter as I've never used it. You can use just newspaper and hay as long as you change it every day. :)

I use newspaper, thin layer of wood chippings and a layer of cheap hay with some good quality hay in corners for nibbling. I didn't like megazorb when I tried it, but that is just personal preference.

I found that only newspaper and hay is very smelly and the hay turns into a slimy mass quickly!

I think you're not supposed to use regular kitty litter as it will dry their paws out. I use a paper based kitty litter (looks like cardboard pellets) and I know some people use megazorb, carefresh or something new called bed-o-linum which is supposed to be fab and I would love to try.

They will use it if you put their hay in it :) Most piggies wee and poo wherever they are when they feel like going, but because they spend so much of their time munching hay a lot of it ends up where they eat!

I don't use a litter tray, not because of any particular reason, but purely because I haven't know any different, other than what they've been used to. I never even thought about searching for a guinea pig forum for tips and advice until recently, so just went with the flow.

I guess if there was another reason it would be as to whether I could train them to poop elsewhere, rather than everywhere lol, or maybe training is better achieved with a younger piggie?

We have been using just newspaper and hay, which was ok. But we are now switching to having hay only in the hay loft and were going to use newspaper and megazorb in the litter tray. We used to have megazorb for the whole cage and liked it alot. Its amazingly cheap too. I just brought 14kilo's for £7!

Also I find they still poop everywhere put peeing is mainly in the tray.

Thanks everyone for your info, ive put shaving in and I'm really proud to say both my boys are using it, but because 1 is longer haired he tends to be abit wet so i wondered about something else hence asking about the kitty litter.

Where do you buy the megazorb from? i will have to look this weekend and treat my boys, I'm hoping to get them a large run made for outside as they love being outside.

Thanks again everyone

I got mine from taylors choice, very reasonable and also the hay experts have it very reasonably priced too.

Does anyone else find their piggies tend to wee in one place? Both of mine do most of their weeing in the wooden house of all places lol- a litter tray wouldn't help in this place so i just put lots of newspaper under the fleece and change it everyday- they don't tend to wee anywhere else which is quite good.

Unfortunatly they don't act the same with poops which go everywhere lol!

Mine poop everywhere too!

Ive got some cat litter that is wood based its like sawdust compacted together into pellets it seems ok they keep using it so I'm pleased.

i want to thank everyone for their responses its been great to hear other peoples responses and advice.

Ive been looking at a house/run at pets at home but its quite expensive at £199.99 I'm wondering is it cheaper to make one than buy one

just been reading this thread and I use the pets at home safe soft bedding in my litter tray over newspaper, and they do use it for all their wee's and some poops too leaving their fleece nice and dry. It makes it nice and soft for them. Just wanted to check that although p@h says that type of bedding is ok for gp's, it is isn't it? There's only a handful in their litter tray, I don't use it in their bedding area. :):)

thanks

Maybe if you put something over the top of the litter tray, like some fleece as a curtain. They like to be hiding under something when they pee/poop apparently :)

I'm going to try to litter train mine soon, I really hope it works! Sukie learn to poop out in the run in one corner when she had her baby boy, but now that she's back in with Lola she goes anywhere! It'd be so handy if it works, since my rabbits are litter trained and it's so easy to clean them out everyday, and saves a lot of money on woodshavings!

I think that normal cat litter is bad if they eat it, it could cause a blockage or something? I just use woodshavings for the rabbits and it's very absorbent, the pee goes right to the bottom. Maybe put some hay on top of the woodshavings or something?

I've been wondering for quite sometime if it's possible to train gpigs to toilet in one area. My girls have trained themselves to walk from their outdoor run into their piggy carrier to come inside but I'd love to toilet train. All ideas welcomed, plus it will help with my next project.

I have taught 2 of my piggies to beg for food by standing on their back legs. It took about a week spending 15 minutes a day.

I got some cucumber and cut it in to really small bits and then just put it slightly out of reach and when they moved to get it I gave it to them. Each time we increased the goal until they could get it.

I imagine litter training would be the same. But you would need a lot of time with them. If I had a whole week off work then I could watch them and every time I saw them go to the toilet I could move them and their poo to a litter box and give them a small piece of cucumber. When you see them using the litter box give them a piece of cucmber. Pigs are pretty smart and would probably catch on in about a week. I just wish I could take a whole week of work to do it, but then I wouldn't get paid and they wouldn't be able to eat that week!

I have a litter box under the hay box which contains megazorb. A few handfuls is enough for a tray (I have 2 of them) and pretty much they use it as a toilet. They also use all their hidy houses too.

Megazorb is cheap £7.00 ish from www.thehayexperts.co.uk and £4.95 for postage however much you order, so if you wanted to get a couple of bags or hay or food it works out cheaper. But the bag lasts ages, about 6 weeks when we had an area 140cm x 35cm that was filled about 10cm deep which was changed every week. I would imagine that it will last a couple of months easy if not more for just litter trays.

hey guys the vet told me recently that for small animals ie hamsters, rabbits, guineas that wood pellets should not be used as they expand when wet and if your piggie eats one it could expand in its stomach....which obviously is very dangerous.

thanks for that info will know not to use wood pellets... I posted earlier in this thread that I use the pets at home safe bedding for all small animals in my litter tray, no one commented if that's ok for piggies - does anyone use this? I don't use in bedding area just a little sprinkle in the litter tray over newspaper? ?/
