Just some reassurance that i have the sexing correct - does this definitely look like a little boy? He's hopefully going in with his father in the next day or so (he's starting to mount his mum at 14 days old) - so i want to make sure i'm definitely pairing dad with a boy and not another girl!

Thanks

Looks like it to me alright,
I'd be thinking about getting ready to seperate soon depending on how independant he is of mum :)

Hi,
thanks for the quick replies.

I'm not sure what you mean by dependent on mum - if you mean do they follow her everywhere? then the answer is yes :o

For the last few days ive been giving the two pups (a boy and girl) their veg in a separate bowl to mum and their bowl is nearly empty each time (obviously their portions are smaller) - but all 3 (mum and pups) are always at the hay rack - and ive seen the two pups sitting in the food bowl to eat their dried food.

Dad (who is in a cage by himself at the moment) doesn't drink much water and my other two bonded pair of boars don't seem to be big drinkers also - so it's very hard for me to tell whether the two pups are drinking from the water bottle (unless i physically stand/watch over them all day - i'm not sure how i'd be able to tell for sure?

The only thing that worries me is mum - because i'm pretty sure she'll be wanting male company again pretty soon and with a randy boy in the cage with her - i'm scared she'll get caught.

I don't want to move him too early - but i don't want to run the risk of my sow getting pregnant again by her own son!.

Any advice you could give is greatly appreciated.

Even if he mounting his mum, I don't think there has ever been a 14 day old guinea pig that has gotten his mum pregnant, has there? I thought I read on a post here that the youngest was 24 days, so three weeks should be fine. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I don't want to cause a pregnancy by giving out wrong info! I could be thinking a brother-sister pregnancy was 24 days, but that would be very early for the girl . . .

I was thinking the same thing - i think that piece of info was on my other post asking on when i should be separating the boy - but i thought that was a brother-sister pregnancy - hence my worries over mum and son. The last thing my girl needs is a back-to-back pregnancy - least of all with her own son!.

It would be interesting to know the age in which baby boys are actually able to reproduce

So far, I haven't heard of a mum-son pregnancy at 15 days.

I must admit that I find two weeks a bit young to separate, even if your boy IS about the earliest starter I have heard of so far!

But if you are very worried and want to be on the safe side, you can always soak a few bits of stale wholemeal bread in full fat goatsmilk for a few days to completement his diet at first. That's what many rescue people on here use for their orphans and runty babies.

So long as my little boy cannot be successful in getting mum pregnant this early on, then ive no problems leaving him where he is until he's 3 weeks old. The last thing i want to do is take him away from mum earlier than necessary.

Is 3 weeks the 'normal' separation age?

Sorry if i sound like a complete numpty - but this is my first experience of a pet pregnancy/litter - so ive nothing to go on or compare to.

3 weeks is the usual time to remove baby boars from their mum and sisters. They can be quite humpy and rumbly before that but there is no need to remove them before that age as they will still need mum's milk up to 3 weeks.

3 weeks seems to be the average age where boys are removed. Mum would've come into season after giving birth, this lasts up to 48 hours. She won't come into season again for another 15-17 days making babies a max of 21 days old by the time her season has finished. :)
