Hi, just want to see if anyone can put my mind at rest b4 Dec goes to the vet 2mrw. A week ago my daughter said she thought there was something wrong with Dec's willy. I checked him and found that at the base of it there was like a layer of soft/solid gunge. I cleaned him up and mange to get rid of it all. I've now noticed that he isn't weeing as much and only eating his fav foods (which isnt like him). I've checked his weight and he's pretty much his usual. He's still his happy chirpy grumpy self, he has no tummy grumbles or sore spots. Am i fretting over nothing? To be on the safe side i've made an appointment for him to see the vet 2mrw morning (thank goodness for my ex mum in law as she has to take all my pets when they need to see the vet). Any insights will be gratefully received. Thank you Nicola x

Please have a piggy seen asap as an emergency if he is not weeing at all! In that case, he definitely needs to be seen by a vet, as he can go downhill very quickly. As long as he is still chipper and eating (and getting fluid through eating and drinking), having him seen tomorrow is probably OK.

Please weigh regularly and if necessary take a urine sample. He can have a hardened semen rod up his willy, which can be rather painful. But there can be other reasons too.

He is weeing, but usually is snuggle rug is soaking every day (hes a lazy boy) but it didnt feel as wet 2day, maybe because its v warm at the mo he's not weeing as much. We just had snuggle time and he was his usual self, he let me check him all over including his nether regions with out a ****, in fact he gave me his big sloppy kisses.

The amount of pee can change in warm weather. Make sure that you offer a bit more juicy veg like cucumber, melon (inclusive rind) or chopped celery.

Cucumber is his food of choice, so theres always a good supply here. Just on the phone to the vet to see if they can fit him intonight instead. Thanks for the advice' Nicola x

If you are lucky, it is nothing; but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Unfortunately i didnt get hold of the vet because as i was waiting for them to answer the phone Ant had an accident and ripped off one of his nails on his back paw. God knows how he did it, my guess is he caught it getting back in his cage. He had his nails clipped last week so i know that they was ok. By the time i had sorted him out the vets had closed aghhh. Will take both Ant & Dec tomorrow for the vet to check them over. Anyhow Dec had a great extra playtime out in the garden and peed like crazy when he got in :)) Nicola x

It doesn't sound like he is ill then! Nail accidents can happen; most will grow back, if sometimes a bit thicker. You can disinfect the area with saline solution (1 pint of boiled, cooled water, mixed with 1tsp of salt) to help prevent an infection.

It takes experience to learn what is normal and what is not; guinea pigs are not good with heat waves. If in doubt, erring on the side of caution is always better. Boar bits need cleaning out regularly anywhay, or they will even more smelly and gunky!

I didnt know you had to keep the penis clean, thought they did that themselves. We do regularly check their behind to make sure theres no foreign objects attached. I gave Ant's baddie a good clean & also gave him a dose of painkiller & antibiotics (Ant has these because he was seriously ill a few months back and has supplies, also they was in date and fine to use). Not having a nail on his paw isnt bothering him because he's running havoc round the living room at the moment, playing with my eldest son. :)
