First of all hi, I've been a reader of this forum for the 3 and a half years I've had guinea pigs but only just made an account. Just wanted to post something about my little piggie Dwight, just to get it off my chest I guess.

I lost Dwight very suddenly in October last year and I still think about him so much. He was only 3 years old, and the vet thinks he died due to an infection, though he had showed no symptoms.

Dwight was always so playful, but a wee rascal at times. His favourite game was stealing veggies right out of his brother Bruce's mouth. Still, every night they would squeeze into the same pigloo (even though they had 2) and cuddle up together to fall asleep. In fact during the summer when it was quite warm I once watched Dwight follow Bruce into the pigloo and cuddle up beside him, then when Bruce had fallen asleep he ran out and into the other one to stretch out and cool down. They were the best of friends. Even when I would take them out for floortime, if I took Bruce out first he would squeak and squeal until Dwight joined him.

Dwight was also always the first to greet anyone who walked into the room. As soon as he heard you open the door he would rush up to the side of the cage and wheek until you went over to him. The bit above his nose all the way to the top of his head was his favourite place to be petted, he could sit on your lap for ages having his nose stroked.

I just hate that this sweet little boy was suffering and I didn't even know. Would give anything for another snuggle with him. RIP my little nugget, love you forever x

Hello and welcome to the forum. What a brave first post to make. I'm so sorry that you lost little Dwight. He looks a very handsome piggy and Bruce, too. It's heartbreaking to lose a piggy at any time, but to lose one suddenly and unexpectedly makes it harder to bear. Piggies are prey animals and hide their symptoms. This means that sometimes even the most experienced owner will miss an illness or symptom. Many of us have had sudden and unexpected losses here on the forum. Please don't blame yourself. The feeling of guilt is a natural part of the grieving process. We all wonder at times, "what if.." but those "what ifs" can't change anything and all they do is torment you. Be kind to yourself. You loved and cared for him and gave him a good life. Popcorn free handsome Dwight.

Thank you, this was so nice to hear (or read I guess!) It's been months now but I still miss him so much. It's definitely comforting to read about other people's experiences with this and realise that it's not weird to feel like that.
Thanks again.

He was a member of your family. It's natural to miss him. I still miss 2 of my piggies who I lost last year, too. We understand x

What beautiful boys, and so sorry for you loss.
It is abundantly clear that you are a very caring and devoted owner, and like VickiA said, sometimes piggies hide their symptoms well.
Please try not to feel guilty, and instead focus on what a wonderful and happy life Dwight had with you.

I am so very sorry you lost Dwight. It is so clear from your lovely tribute how loved Dwight was and that is the main thing in life. He loved you and you loved him. In time the pain will fade and nice memories will remain.

Sleep well little one

RIP Dwight

Thank you all so much for the kind words <3 I felt it was something only fellow guinea pig owners would understand and that is clear from your responses.

Anyway sorry my first post was a sad one! Positivity from now on haha!
