I live in Scampton village, famous for the Dambust
I'm absolutely gutted :( On cuddling Peggy last night and looking at her little front paws I noticed what I thought was a bit of poo stuck to the underneath of one of her front feet, then alarm bells started ringing, it was a small scab hanging off :( which when I touched it fell off and revealed a small sore area that is weeping clear fluid 8... I just cried cos I've been through this with Poppy and it is just so frustrating and difficult to heal 8...
This morning it has scabbed over again and her foot is swollen to one side rather like Poppy's was.
I'm giving nurofen 0.2ml - can she have any more than one dose in a 24hr period?
I have the bumblefoot cream from GG and I have Baytril but after trying to treat Poppy's with anything and everything suggested by people the only thing I have found of any use is to just keep it clean and dry and after asking Vedra about Poppy's foot when it was sore she felt that Baytril didn't really have any use and just said to give anti-inflammatory and pain relief.
I know that I am keeping my girls clean and in the best conditions I can on vetbed and fleece which is changed religously everyday, I just don't know why Peggy has ended up with it grrrr
I am thinking on the lines that is is like AP has suggested before, degenerative, maybe it is genetics as Peggy and Poppy have now had it (mum and daughter) or from being neglected prior to being in rescue. Maybe it has something to do with when she was bad with her back legs a short while ago and it is stress related or poor immune system?
I just wish the poor little thing didn't have to suffer :( She is pottering about quite happily - I think I am probably suffering more worrying myself sick about the poor little girl 8...

Poor Peggy. I hope she isn't too uncomfortable. Your post was very informative though. Thanks. x

I am so sorry for your girl and for you to have to go through it all again.

I have seen Laura posting that you can have nurofen twice a day, but only for the short term.

Wishing you and your poorly girl the best of luck!

Bless, I really feel for you Mandy. Sometimes it just feels like you get over one thing with them, and then another crops up. It's so draining when that happens. Sending hugs to you and Peggy!

I think you're doing the right thing to treat it. I also don't believe in the use of systemic antibiotics for a problem that, IMO, could probably be treated far more effectively with topical treatment. A topical antibiotic, if necessary...not that you see much of that suggested/prescribed.

Children's Nurofen/Calpol - 0.2ml can be given up to twice daily.

Yesterday, I found a pig that is here on holiday had developed bumblefoot.
The scab came off and has left a residue of a white, creamy substance.
I very much doubt whether it is treatable/curable.
It is pointless giving Baytril or any systemic antibiotic for two reasons. There is no evidence to suggest that an infection is present and secondly, because of the poor peripheral blood supply to the foot, it is difficult for any drug to cross from the blood stream to the surrounding tissues.
I have tried many different forms of treatment against bumblefoot over many years and have yet to find one that cures the problem.
I intend to treat this one by using Aloe Vera Ointment held against the foot by a bandage.
I somehow feel it will be a waste of time.

I think you are right there, its just a case of doing the best you can.

She's now got a problem with her mouth/teeth 8... After she had her medicine last night I gave her a treat and she was eating it like she was chewing a stuck bit of toffee and she wasn't crunching it, she was kind of sucking it from side to side in her mouth :(
I'm going to ring Lisa this morning and see if she can see her today. Hopefully it is something that is easily sorted. Peggy's foot is swollen still this morning :(

Aw, bless her. Did you manage to get hold of Lisa?

Little Fairy is off to the dentist too today. :)

Hi Laura, Lisa has just rang, she had been doing Fairy's toofy pegs :)
She said she will see her 6.30pm Sunday evening as she's rather busy. I'm sure Peggy will be ok until then - she is still eating - I am still giving her nurofen which hopefully will help with any pain.
Lisa said it does sound like her back teeth, if she discovers it is then she said she isn't very good at doing back teeth and that we will need to take her to Vedra's.

I hope you and Lisa can get to the bottom of Peggy's teggy trouble. If you do end up coming down to see Vedra you're welcome to pop in and meet Pandora & Harrison. This time I should be feeling a bit better. rolleyes

In a nearby town there is both a dental and a chiropodist surgery in the same building, I suppose they have heard all of the jokes!

More sad news

Just got back from Lisa's.
She is almost certain Peggy is going into heart failure 8... when she opened her mouth with the buccal seperators her little mouth and tongue were very pale :( she said her back teeth are very slightly overgrown and do need attention, but we need to take her to Vedra's for this.
She also noticed straight away something I thought was Peggy's rather fat flappy bit under her chin - which was infact a big lump of fluid that had collected which has been drained tonight.
Basically we have come away with frusemide max half a tablet daily if needed, Feroglobin 0.2ml for 2-3 weeks and some Povodine Iodine to wash Peggy's foot in. She is also having nurofen as pain relief/anti inflammatory.
Questions:
If Peggy has heart failure, this will sound stupid but is she going to die really soon? 8...
Will she live quite happily on some medication and if so are the medications I have been given enough?
I have rang Vedra tonight to ask her to see Peggy to have her back teeth done as Lisa isn't very good at doing back teeth (her words) :)
and also to get another opinion on Peggy's condition.
Anyway we are off to see Vedra at 2pm tomorrow :)
Poor Peggy, forgot to say she has had soft poo's today :( she hasn't been eating her hay today though, only veg and pellets :( It's been a pain though cos she's been getting them trod into her sore foot :(

The longest I have had a pig survive after a suspected heart attack has been four days. This was with no medication.
I know some owners give their "heart pigs" the drug Fortekor, however this does not act directly on the heart. It causes the blood pressure to drop and hence the heart has to make less effort to pump the blood around the body.

Oh Mandy i'm so so sorry love, please give Peggy loads of little loving kisses and strokes from me and the girls send her healing wheeeeeeeks xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
HUGS for you too xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I hate bumblefoot, it's nasty and i just couldn't get Duke's to ever heal up :(

Oh wow, that's not what anyone was expecting. I don't know what to say. Sending you lots of big hugs. x

Been to Vedra today. The good news is she dosen't think Peggy has anything wrong with her heart, she thinks the fluid build up was more likely an allergic reaction to parasites. She had a listen to her heart and she said it sounds fine.
Nothing wrong with her back teeth either. She has Prednisolone half a tablet a day for ten days for her bumblefoot.
Poppy (Peggy's mum) went too as I had concerns about her bladder, she has in the past had a bladder stone in her urethra removed (last Oct) and has on ocassions squeaked whe weeing, Vedra is keeping her for a couple of days to x-ray her, she said her bladder does feel enlarged.
So, bit of a funny old day really, relieved Peggy isn't going to Peg it :)) well not yet I hope bless her, relieved that Poppy's ?bladder problem will hopefully be sorted, but tonight still worried sick about Peggy :...
Got home tonight, obviously she has had a stressfull day, car journey, not eaten much, she has lost 100g in a day :... and observing her eating her supper veg and pellets, there is still something :x wrong with her mouth/teeth, so bloomin frustrating, I feel like crying, she is so tiny :( When I go to pick Poppy up which will probably be Wednesday or Friday I will ask Vedra to check her again. Just because two people can't see anything wrong dosen't mean there is nothing wrong :( I will give her some Daktarin gel just to see if that makes any difference, just to try something, failing that I really don't know :(
It was great to meet the lovely Pandora and Harrison today, made a stressfull day less stressfull for me, so thank you Laura :)

You'd never know Peggy is the age she is, she's a little sweetie. I do agree that "something" is going on with her mouth, the way she was munching on the hay. If it's not dental I would suspect something oral, to me it still seems like she was trying to chew the hay so carefully, like she was trying not to let it fill her mouth as most piggies do. Hopefully the Daktarin will help somewhat. The weight loss could "just" be the upheaval'of the day; she won't have been eating nearly as much as normal as she was on the move for quite a while, and as she is so dainty she may just lose weight very easily. Do try the Science Recovery again, even if she'll only eat it cold it should help boost her weight again.

Even though there is still a lot of worry and uncertainty about both your girls, you know Poppy is in good hands and it is such a relief that Peggy is unlikely to Peg it as soon as you were led to believe yesterday.

Sending lots of hugs, do let us know when you get news of Poppy. Lovely to see you again today. xx

Peggy is still eating with difficulty this morning, she has independantly ate grated/pureed veg and is sat happily at her food bowl eating/sucking/chewing her pellets. Still not eating her hay :(
I have ground down some of her food and mashed it and she has been eating that, she won't eat the science recovery :(
She has had some Daktarin Oral Gel, incase it is her mouth to see if she shows any signs of improvement today, If not there must be something wrong with her teeth :(

At least there is a bit of improvement, it's something. Stick with the Daktarin for a few days, see if it makes any further difference. Fingers crossed for the lovely Peggy. :)

Had Peggy out loads this evening and she has let me give her little bits of science recovery without too much fuss, she has eaten tiny bits of spinach :) very sticky poo's, she has lost another 50g today, she's now 698g, she was 868g :( I am positive she will get better, just going to take time and patience and little and often feeds to build up her strength again :) she's been having loads of cuddles today, we are all missing Poppy so much :(

Peggy is still today not eating without problems :( although there is improvement, the reluctance to eat the hay is obvious and she is choosing to eat veg and pellets, I am just about to give her some more science recovery and her oral gel and antiinflammatory for her foot, then will weigh her to see if there is another weight loss :(
Texted Vedra today to see how Poppy is and haven't yet heard back, tried to phone her this evening and her phone is switched off 8... I've sent her an e-mail, just miss my Poppy pops and want to know how she is 8... I appreciate she must be really busy :)

Little Peggy has put on 1g tonight :) not much but it is not a loss :)
She's been so good tonight sat on my knee having science recovery and her medicines without fuss, had her foot soaking in some watered down Iodine, it is so swollen :( She has eaten independantly lots of fresh coriander and parsley and two chicory leaves fine, definately improving somewhat :)
No news on Poppy yet :(
