Can anybody who got these help me with a couple of questions please.

I'm currently using the widely available plastic water bottles which come in clear, blue, red or yellow. Despite using bottle brush, they are now after 2 or 3 months developing a green tinge inside (at the bottom of the main cylinder) that I can't get rid of so I need to bin them and get new bottles.

I was wondering if the same thing happens after a while with the glass bottles please? I understand general benefits of being able to put them in a dishwasher (eg sterilises them) but not sure about this green problem.

My second question is how thick is the glass? Do they feel fragile to handle or are they pretty strong and solid feeling?

Thanks for any help.

I have had the living world one but now I have another glass one (think it's called kaytee?!) and no they do not feel fragile at all. I have never had any problems with algae growing in them or anything like that :)

I use both and neither go green if you change the water twice/once a day. Failing that I sterilise in Milton fluid once a week anyway just to make sure. The glass is quite thick on the glass bottles. I wouldn't say they were fragile by any means

It will happen with all bottles, it's to do with the sun light, fill the bottle half way with rice and then 1/4 more with water then shake shake shake for 5-10 minutes, should clean up
The living world glass bottle is terrible in my opinion... They break leak and randomly stop working:hmm:I'd find a good brand of plastic bottle and then try the rice trick! It works for me:yahoo:

Will definitely try that thanks. What would you recommend as a good brand of plastic bottle?

I use the Bunny classic large bottles, and buy the scratch and newton bottle covers (green). I'm had my bottles for nearly a year now, with the covers on, with sunlight shining too, and there has been no green what so ever. The scratch and newton bottle covers are slightly more pricey than usual covers, but are definitely worth the buy, rather than having to buy new bottles after a few months.

I have it and its not fragile at all, very substancial. I love it. Use a bottle cover or a sock on it to keep the sunlight out and you will have no algae. I also love that 1 side is flat so it sits against the cage perfectly and doesnt move about. It also has 2 attachments to secure it to the cage, again so its very secure and doesnt move about, which of course helps to stop leaking.

Wow just tried the rice thing - I only put in a small amount of rice and a small amount of water - after 20 seconds shaking, the green was all gone!:yahoo:

Yes, the covers are great, they also insulate from heat or when the weather gets colder - but won't stop the bottle freezing if it is really cold.

I had mine since last year, through the cold winter and mine didn't freeze at all. But it wasn't the harshest of winters. It's main use is to prevent algae and keep the bottle cool in the summer.

HeHe, they froze in 2010/11 and 2011/12, I used plastic bags stuffed with hay over the top, but even that did not work on the coldest of nights, I think it went down to -18 in some areas, it killed my eucalyptus tree!
