3 weeks ago I got 2 guinea pigs from a pet shop (a really good one in the past have used them for years) and was told they were both girls and were a couple of months old. I checked them both when i got home and agreed that they were girls but yesterday took them to the vets as the last week I've had suspicions one was actually a boy, vet has conformed my suspicions so I have now separated them as I really would like to skip having babies. I went back to the pet shop to ask if they had a date of birth and it turns out by their records i got the guinea pigs when they were just 2 weeks old.

So my queries are,
is 2 weeks actually old enough to be completely away from the mother ( i know they are quite independent from a few days old)
could the female be pregnant already (would have been 4 weeks old when i saw all the mating dance from the male) as far as i can say the female kept pushing the male away
I don't know if this means anything but yesterday both guinea pigs seemed very subdued compared to the last few days with all the mating noises and dancing

I have read the forums threads and looked at other websites and have some good ideas of the answers but it has been 12 years since I've kept guinea pigs and even then only had one as he just didn't like any other guinea pigs his original owner tried bonding him with so he became my little mascot always with me.

Thank you for reading and i hope it all makes sense.

Hi and welcome!

What a pickle you are in! You are welcome to post pictures of the crucial area in our pregnancy& sexing section if you want a second opinion. Otherwise, I can recommend this link here as the best for sexing youngsters. http://www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm

Two weeks is very young to separate; the babies have just about learned to eat adult food, but are not weaned yet at that age. We recommend to separate any male babies at 3 weeks old (which coincides with the weaning) to prevent them from making babies with mum or any sisters. Baby girls start from 4 weeks onwards, so there is unfortunately a chance that she could be pregnant. :(

Could you please open a thread for your girl in our pregnancy section in which you can get ongoing advice and support? We have got detailed guides for all stages of a pregnancy until the babies are old enough to be rehomed at the top of the section. Unfortunately, it is going to be a long slog for you, as you won't be seeing any real developments until week 6-7 - nor will a vet for sure! :(
